How To Relieve Kidney Stone Pain Fast WithMedicines

The most convenient way to relieve kidney stone pain fast is by taking painkillers. As per the National Institutes of Health (NIH), painkillers such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, acetaminophen (paracetamol) or metamizole can relieve the pain caused by stones. Stronger painkillers may be recommended for very severe pain. But you must consult a professional before taking any medicine.According to the National Kidney Foundation, NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin may reduce pain and inflammation, but they can harm the kidneys in high doses or with long-term use. Moreover, people with low kidney function, heart disease, or high blood pressure should avoid NSAIDs, unless advised by a medical professional.

Shedding more light on this, Dr Shashank shares, “For instant relief, you can take common over-the-counter pain relief medicines as advised by a doctor, which help reduce pain and inflammation. In some cases, doctors may prescribe stronger pain relief or medicines that relax the urinary tract to help the stone pass more easily. Other than this, try to stay active with light walking, by engaging in gentle movement, as this may help the stone move down faster. Avoid holding urine for longer periods and go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge.”

Dr Gupta advises, “From a medical standpoint, pain is usually managed with prescribed medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs or antispasmodics, which help relax the ureter and ease discomfort. In some cases, doctors may also prescribe medications that help the stone pass more easily. It is important not to rely on random over-the-counter painkillers repeatedly without guidance, especially if the pain is severe or recurring.”

Tips to Avoid Kidney Damage From Pain Medicines

The fastest way to deal with kidney stone pain is by using painkillers. However, you should always follow a professional's guidance regarding pain management medications. This is because taking high doses for a long time may lead to kidney damage by affecting kidney tissue or blood flow. This risk increases with age. The National Kidney Foundation shares the following tips to avoid kidney damage from pain medicines:

  • Always read and carefully follow the label instructions.
  • Talk to your healthcare professional about how often you can use pain medicines.
  • Stay hydrated when taking pain medicines to avoid dehydration.
  • Use pain medicines only as directed, at the lowest dose and for the shortest time.

Home Remedies To Relieve Kidney Stone Pain

Now, let us understand how kidney stone pain can be cured at home. “Kidney stone pain can be very sharp and sudden, but a few quick steps can help reduce the pain immediately,” shares Dr Shashank MS and lists down the following tips:

  • First, drink plenty of water, as it helps to flush the stone through the urinary tract and reduce irritation.
  • Warm fluids like herbal tea can also help relax the muscles (However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a professional before consuming it).
  • Applying heat is very helpful. (As per a 2021 PubMed study, heat-patch is a possible candidate for pain relief in kidney stone patients).
  • Use a hot water bag or take a warm bath to relax the muscles around the kidney and reduce pain.
  • Rest in a comfortable position, usually lying on the side where the pain feels less severe.

“While these measures may provide temporary relief, kidney stone pain is not something to ignore or manage repeatedly at home. Proper diagnosis through imaging and timely treatment is essential to prevent complications and recurrence. The focus should always be on both relieving pain and addressing the underlying cause,” says Dr Gupta.

When To Visit A Doctor?

Kidney stone pain can be dealt with using painkillers or using hot water bags. These simple hacks can indeed provide temporary relief. “However, if the pain is very severe, lasts for many hours, or is associated with fever, vomiting, or blood in urine, seek medical help immediately.  These may be signs of complications that need urgent treatment,” warns Dr Shashank MS.“These may indicate obstruction or infection, which can become serious if delayed,” warns Dr Gupta.
