A decrease in platelet count is a characteristic of dengue fever. Some people with a serious case of dengue might experience a steep decline in the blood platelets, which can even be fatal. It is extremely important to monitor platelets if you are infected with dengue to prevent life-threatening effects. The virus reproduces inside the blood cells, which may cause harm to other organs including bone marrow, this leads to reduction in the platelet count. Lower levels can cause acute bleeding, which can then lead to death. Since there is no medicine for dengue as of now, diet is the only possible way to manage dengue fever and increase platelet count naturally.

Papaya leaves

Papaya leaves are one of the tried and tested remedies to increase platelet count. These contain a phytochemical named acetogenin, which is found to be effective in increasing platelets with a relatively fast speed. Besides, papaya leaves also contain carotene and flavonoid, which are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in nature. Consume fresh papaya leaves juice for three to four days or until the platelets are back to normal range. There are two ways to make papaya leaves juice.

  • One by grinding some leaves with a little amount of water and then straining out the juice.
  • Second method is to boil four to five papaya leaves in water for 10 minutes, strain the liquid and drink.

Kiwi is the richest source of antioxidants and so, it is great for dengue recovery. Besides, kiwis also contain vitamin C and potassium, which help in increasing platelet count. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is great for increasing red blood cells but this can also increase platelet count. Dengue patients should have pomegranate daily to prevent platelets from dropping. Pomegranates are excellent sources of iron, which is extremely important for boosting immunity and increasing platelets.

Beetroot

Beetroot is a well-known food for replenishing blood loss and increasing haemoglobin. However, this is also great for replenishing platelets that are dropping due to dengue infection. The best way is to prepare fresh beetroot juice and drink it twice a day.

Vitamin C-rich foods

Foods that are rich in vitamin C are extremely important for dengue recovery. Vitamin C and antioxidants found in these foods can increase platelet count, when consumed regularly. Dengue patients must be given lemon water, oranges, amla, and other berries to recover faster.
