How Many Eggs Can Kids Under 5 Years Eat Per Day? Expert Shares

Wondering how many eggs your child should eat daily? Here’s an expert-backed guide to safe egg intake for kids under 5.

Eggs are frequently referred to as a complete food, and the reason is perfectly justified. They are economical, easy to prepare, and loaded with essential nutrients that are necessary, especially for a child's growth and development. However, for parents of young children, one common question keeps coming up, as to how many eggs can kids under 5 years eat per day?

To clear the confusion, and have our answer, we turned to expert insights from Edwina Raj, Head of Services - Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, who explained to us the right quantity, benefits, and precautions around egg consumption in early childhood. Read ahead to know everything she shared with us.

Why Eggs Are Good for Young Children

Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse for growing kids. Edwina shared that eggs are packed with high-quality protein, beneficial fats, essential vitamins, and minerals which greatly impact brain development, immunity, and physical growth. One of the most remarkable nutrients found in eggs is choline, which is known to improve memory and cognitive skills, especially important in the early childhood years when the brain development is at its peak.

Eggs as food for kids have the advantage of being Vitamin D rich, the vitamin that is essential for bone growth, absorption of calcium, along with B vitamins that play the role of energy metabolism support. “Since eggs are soft and easy to chew when cooked well, they are suitable for toddlers transitioning to solid foods,” she said.

How Many Eggs Are Safe Per Day Under Age 5?

The number of eggs to be eaten daily is determined by the child's age and diet.

"Children between the ages of 1 to 3 years can have half to one egg daily according to the experts while a whole egg per day is the safe and healthy limit for children aged 4 to 5 years," suggested Edwina.

While some doctors believe that children can benefit from up to one egg a day in terms of protein without their digestive systems getting a burden, in reality, it all depends on the quantity of foods. In fact, kids’ stomachs are small and they should get some of everything to not feel left out with their diets. Reducing the intake of one food (no matter how nutritious) can lead kids to not wanting other crucial food ingredients.

Can Kids Eat Eggs Every Day?

Yes, eggs can be eaten daily in moderation. However, eggs must be incorporated into a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and dairy. Just eggs won’t suffice in terms of nutrition for toddlers.

Giving multiple eggs every day is not necessary and may crowd out other nutrient-rich foods. Dietary diversity guarantees that children get fibre, antioxidants, and different micronutrients that eggs don’t provide them with.

Guidelines for Giving Eggs to Kids Safely

Eggs are a good source of protein, but parents should consider some precautions. Here is what expert Edwina suggested:

  • Always serve eggs well cooked to reduce the risk of foodborne infections like salmonella.
  • Introduce eggs slowly, particularly if there is a family history of food allergies.
  • Be alert for symptoms of allergy such as rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, see a doctor right away.
  • When making eggs for young kids, don't use too much salt, butter, or spicy seasonings.

Bottomline

When offered in proper quantity, eggs can be an asset to your child’s meals every day. They are great for growth, brain power, and immunity; however, they need to be complemented by a diverse and healthy diet. According to experts, moderation and variety are the key factors in child nutrition.
