We are living in a world where fitness has gone beyond luxury. It has now transitioned into a lifestyle. More and more people are working out, be it in gyms or at homes. And when it comes to workout, treadmill’s mention must be made. Have you ever wondered how the treadmill was invented? Today, we will walk you through its surprising history and invention.

When Treadmills Were Used in Victorian Prisons

There was a time when running on a treadmill was deemed as torture. In the early nineteenth century, British prisons were extremely overcrowded. During that time, the authorities were looking for ways to handle the inmates.

This is when Sir William Cubitt, a civil engineer, invented the first treadmill to punish prisoners, while forcing them to do hard physical labour. The original machine looked like a giant wooden barrel with steps on the outside. It was completely different from the modern machine. To keep the massive wheel turning, inmates had to hold a safety rail and continuously step on the spinning spokes.

How Use of Treadmills Were Stopped in Prisons

When the prisoners constantly walked on this grueling wheel, their movement powered gears that ground grain or pumped water. The convicts were often forced to step on these punishing machines for six or more exhausting hours daily.

This extreme physical exertion, combined with very poor prison diets, often caused a massive number of injuries among the prisoners. However, prison wardens praised the machine because its mind-numbing monotony was successful in breaking the spirits of unruly and rebellious prisoners. But the machines were eventually banned in Britain by the late nineteenth century. They were termed as excessively cruel and making prisoners work as free labourers.

How Treadmill Transitioned To Medical and Personal Use

The first official United States patent for a treadmill was issued in the year 1913. It was simply termed as a manual ‘training machine’. As health awareness slowly started to grow, doctors began using these walking machines to diagnose heart and lung conditions.

In 1952, the invention of the electric treadmill changed the device from a manual tool into a staple of modern medicine. This motorised invention created the way for treadmills to eventually have its place in local gyms, hospitals, and everyday homes. By the time the massive fitness craze hit in the 1970s, the treadmill was perfectly positioned as a workout essential.

How Treadmill Emerged as an Everyday Fitness Essential

The modern treadmill is completely different from its original torturous design. It is found in almost every commercial gym. Companies now design highly advanced treadmills which contain touchscreen displays, heart rate monitors, and built-in entertainment systems.

There are models created specifically to slide under standing desks as well, so that people can walk while they work in offices. Specialised versions like underwater hydrotherapy treadmills and anti-gravity machines are also there; these allow for low-impact physical rehabilitation. It is truly fascinating how a device that was once built to torture prisoners evolved into a beloved tool for health and wellness.

Conclusion

From a Victorian punishment to a modern fitness machine, the treadmill made a remarkable evolution. This focuses on the dramatic shift in how society views physical exertion. Once specifically created to break the spirits of weary prisoners through monotonous labour, the machine now empowers millions by improving their overall health. This has been possible due to decades of technological advancements, which helped successfully transform this dreaded wooden wheel into a wellness tool that is used in homes and gyms worldwide. The treadmill now stands as a fascinating testament to human innovation, completely transforming a dark chapter of history into a globally celebrated fitness machine.
