Ever Tried Blue Cheese? Expert Explains How It Can Benefit Your Health

Most of us love cheese and add it to different meals. But have you heard about blue cheese which has a plethora of benefits? The inclusion of edible mould results in the development of greenish-blue spots and veins, which give the cheese its distinctive blue colour. Often enjoyed as an addition to salads, spreads, or even on its own, blue cheese offers more than just a delightful taste. We spoke to Dr Ekta Singhwal, MSc Dietician, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who listed the health benefits of blue cheese.

Health Benefits Of Blue Cheese

Rich in Nutrients

“Blue cheese is a nutrient powerhouse, providing essential vitamins and minerals. It contains calcium for bone health, phosphorus for energy metabolism, and a variety of B vitamins that contribute to overall well-being”, said Dr Singhwal. Adding blue cheese to your diet adds a nutritional boost to your meals.

Protein Source

For those seeking protein from non-meat sources, blue cheese is a noteworthy option. Protein is necessary for immunological response, muscle repair, and cellular health in general. Including blue cheese in your diet can contribute to meeting your daily protein needs.

Probiotics for Gut Health

Fermented foods like blue cheese are a natural source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome. Maintaining a balanced gut microbiome is linked to improved digestion, a strengthened immune system, and even better mental health.

Potential Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Dr Singhwal said, “Certain compounds found in blue cheese, such as peptides and fatty acids, may possess anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health issues, and incorporating foods with potential anti-inflammatory effects, like blue cheese, may contribute to overall well-being.”

Rich in Antioxidants

Blue cheese contains antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the body. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralising free radicals, which, if left unchecked, can contribute to chronic diseases and ageing. Including blue cheese in your diet adds an extra layer of defence against oxidative damage.

According to a 2013 study by the Scientific World Journal, it was found that giving mice 10 mg of blue cheese once daily for two days immediately reduced inflammation and increased cellular regeneration.

Supports Bone Health

According to Allied Market Research, the high calcium content of blue cheese lowers the risk of osteoporosis by improving overall bone density. Also, blue cheese has phosphorus, which strengthens teeth and gums, in addition to calcium, which is healthy for teeth.

Moderation in Sodium

Dr Singhwal highlighted, “While it's essential to consume blue cheese in moderation, it's worth noting that the sodium content is relatively lower compared to other types of cheese. Keeping an eye on sodium intake is crucial for maintaining heart health, and choosing blue cheese over saltier options can be a wise choice for those mindful of their sodium levels.”

How To Add Blue Cheese Into Your Diet

While blue cheese offers numerous health benefits, it's essential to consume it in moderation. Here are some ways to include blue cheese in your diet, as listed by the expert:

  • Salads: Crumble blue cheese on top of salads for a tangy and savoury kick.
  • Cheese Boards: Make a delightful cheese board featuring blue cheese alongside complementary fruits, nuts, and crackers.
  • Dressings and Sauces: Use blue cheese as an ingredient in homemade dressings or sauces for added depth of flavour.
  • Pairing with Fruits: Enjoy blue cheese with fresh fruits like pears or grapes for a delicious and balanced snack.
