These 4 Food Combinations Can Make You Sick As Per Ayurveda

We love to experiment with our recipes by adding unconventional ingredients or combine our meals with hot or cold drinks to make our eating experience more enjoyable. According to Ayurveda, while combining foods, one must be mindful of the effects it might have on the body. Every food as per the ancient science of Ayurveda has its own rasa (taste), virya (energy) or vipaka (effect on digestion). While every individual's digestion system is different, the overall good health depends on choosing the right food combinations. Going for the wrong food combos can disturb the body's heating or cooling energy and cause indigestion which may result in a variety of skin diseases, allergies, constipation or indigestion.

According to Dr Jyotsna Kadam, Medical Officer, Vedicure Healthcare And Wellness, Pune, these are the food combos that people may like but are harmful for health and can cause health disorders.

1. Milk And Chyawanprash

The taste of Chyawanprash considering it has a mix of various herbs and spices can be overwhelming for the taste buds, and one might be tempted to neutralize its taste by combining it with milk or tea. But Ayurveda doesn't recommend this as a healthy combination. According to Dr. Kadam, Chyawanprash must be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning without milk or tea. Nothing must be consumed for at least 1-1.5 hours of having Chyawanprash. The reason why the immunity-booster medicinal mix does not go well with milk is because Ayurveda prohibits combining any sour fruit with milk. It disturbs the digestion and create imbalances.

Harmful Effects Of This Food Combo

2. Banana And Milk

Bad Food Combos

Now this is something which would be difficult to resist for many. Many people love their banana shakes or simply chopped bananas with a bowl of milk and sugar. Banana and milk are also part of panchamrut and are given as Prasad in many temples. But according to Ayurveda, the combination can lead to various health issues. Eating bananas with milk can diminish agni (energy that is responsible for all digestive processes) and produce toxins leading to many health problems.

While the combination of banana and milk is not considered good, if eaten separately, both the foods aid digestion.

Harmful Effects Of This Food Combo

  • It may cause cold, cough and sinus problems
  • It can cause hair fall
  • Constipation

3. Sandwich With Cold Coffee

This is again something which is not very uncommon. We love to combine sandwich-cold coffee or hot samosa-cold drink. But Ayurveda might not be a fan of this combination and prohibits one to take hot and cold things together as it disturbs the digestion system. Besides salt and milk must not be taken in combination as it results in many skin diseases.

Harmful Effects Of This Food Combo

  • Upset tummy and other digestion issues
  • Skin issues

4. Milk And Melons

Bad Food Combos

Ayurveda does not advise taking sour fruits with milk. Milk before or soon after having Melons must be avoided. Milk is a dairy product while Melon is a sweet and sour fruit. When stomach produces acid to digest melon, it doesn't go well with milk and causes indigestion. This also confuses our body cells which may lead to many other diseases, according to Ayurveda. In fact most of the fruits don't go well with milk except seasonal and sweet mangoes. The combination of the two is considered rasayana in Ayurveda and when consumed over a period of time provides energy to the body throughout the year.

However as far as melon and milk are considered, they must not be taken together.

Harmful Effects Of This Food Combo

  • Indigestion
  • Stomach ache
  • Nausea

Thus, while eating two foods together, it is important to consider their post-digestive effect as the food that are not appropriate to have together can lead to production of toxins and cause imbalances in the body.
