The capital city is witnessing a sharp increase in H1N1 (swine flu) cases. So far this year, Delhi has recorded a total of 1,777 confirmed cases of H1N1, as of late August. Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has called for a review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat today to assess the severity of the situation. The meeting will also check whether government hospitals are ready to handle the situation.
To understand why H1N1 cases are rising in Delhi, we reached out to our experts, Dr Niraj Kumar, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, ShardaCare-Healthcity, Greater Noida and Dr Tushar Tayal, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon.
Why Delhi is Witnessing Spike in H1N1 cases
Dr Kumar says that Delhi is witnessing a significant rise in H1N1 influenza cases, with 1,777 infections reported till August 20, 2026, compared with 229 during the corresponding period last year. Explaning the reasons behind it, he says, “The surge is likely being driven by a combination of seasonal weather changes, increased person-to-person transmission, travel and lower population immunity to the currently circulating influenza variant.”
The expert continues, “Influenza viruses undergo small genetic changes over time, which can make more people susceptible to infection even when the virus remains the same subtype. Experts have clarified that there is no evidence of a new or more dangerous H1N1 strain in circulation.”
Dr Kumar adds, “The current season is also showing a wider range of symptoms in some patients, including persistent cough, high fever, body ache, fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea. While most patients recover with appropriate care, people with diabetes, heart or lung disease, older adults and young children are at greater risk of complications such as pneumonia and respiratory distress. Early medical consultation is therefore important, particularly when fever or breathing difficulty persists.”

Symptoms and Treatment of H1N1
Shedding light on its symptoms, Dr Tayal says, “At present, the doctors are seeing a significant number of patients presenting with flu-like symptoms, including high-grade fever, which in some cases can reach 103°F, along with chills, a runny nose, sore throat and cough. Some patients may also experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.”
The expert further explains, “A large proportion of these patients are testing positive for influenza, including swine flu. The reassuring aspect is that, in most otherwise healthy individuals, influenza is a self-limiting viral illness that can be managed with adequate rest, hydration and symptomatic treatment.”
So who is at risk? “However, patients with severe symptoms or those with low immunity may require antiviral medication, as advised by a doctor. Antibiotics do not have a role in treating influenza unless there is a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection,” says Dr Tayal.

When should you seek medical help? Answering this, Dr Tayal says, “It is important for people with flu-like symptoms to take precautions to prevent transmission, including wearing a mask, maintaining good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with others. If the fever persists or worsens, or if there is difficulty breathing or a drop in oxygen levels, medical attention should be sought immediately.”

Conclusion
The recent surge in Delhi's H1N1 cases is indeed concerning. But experts reassure that it is primarily driven by seasonal shifts and weather changes, and not a new, more dangerous viral strain. Residents can protect themselves and their families during this outbreak by maintaining strict hygiene, monitoring symptoms early, and seeking prompt medical care for severe complications.
