If you live with asthma, you may have wondered whether certain foods could be making your symptoms worse. While diet does not cause asthma, some foods can make asthma worse, and some foods may actually help to keep their lungs healthier. Knowing the difference could make a big difference to the way your asthma is managed day-to-day. We spoke to a lung specialist for advice about what to be wary of and what to eat.
Can Food Actually Trigger Asthma Symptoms?
Dr Shivaraj A L, Lead Consultant and HOD Pulmonology, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, clarifies the link between food and asthma. "Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways, making breathing difficult. While food is not a direct cause of asthma, certain foods can trigger symptoms in some people."

He lists some common triggers to be aware of:
- Foods containing sulphite: such as dried fruits, wine and processed potatoes
- Meats with preservatives such as hot dogs, canned meat, ham, pepperoni slices, and sausages.
- Allergens: foods associated with personal allergies, like milk, eggs, peanuts, shellfish, tree nuts
He stresses that identifying and avoiding your own specific triggers can help reduce asthma flare-ups significantly. According to a 2020 review published in Nutrition Reviews, researchers looked at how diet affects asthma risk and symptoms.
Evidence suggests diets focused on plant-based foods may protect against asthma and improve symptoms by affecting inflammation, oxidation, and gut microbes. The review found that eating more fruits and vegetables, reducing animal products, and managing weight may all help calm the immune responses involved in asthma.

What Foods Can Support Better Lung Health?

According to Dr Shivaraj, A balanced diet can actually improve lung function. He recommends including:
- Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, including berries, oranges, spinach, broccoli and carrots, can help combat inflammation
- Omega-3 foods like salmon, sardines, walnuts and flax seeds to maintain a healthy inflammatory response.
- Vitamin D-rich foods
- Whole grains and legumes
- Foods that are high in magnesium, such as leafy greens and pumpkin seeds.
Why Does Hydration Matter for Asthma?

Dr Shivaraj explains that staying well-hydrated plays an important role too. Adequate fluid intake helps keep mucus thinner, making it easier to clear from the airways.
He also mentions that a healthy weight, achieved by a proper diet, may help to control asthma; poor nutrition can lead to increased symptoms.

Is There a Single Diet That Works for Everyone With Asthma?
Dr Shivaraj is clear that no universal "asthma diet" exists. "What benefits one person may not benefit another." His recommended approach is straightforward. Eat a varied, nutrient-rich diet, avoid your known personal triggers, and continue following the treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare provider.
He adds an important reminder. Good nutrition supports your body, but it should complement, not replace, your prescribed asthma medications and medical care.
