Bronchitis, characterised by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as coughing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. While seeking medical advice is crucial, there are several simple and effective home remedies that can help ease the symptoms of bronchitis and promote recovery.
Home Remedies to Alleviate Bronchitis Symptoms
We spoke to our expert Dr Arun Chowdary Kotaru, Consultant, Pulmonologist & Sleep Medicine at Artemis Hospital Gurugram as he shared with us some home remedies to ease the symptoms of bronchitis. Here is what he shared with us.
1. Stay Hydrated
Adequate hydration is essential for managing bronchitis symptoms. Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the respiratory passages moist, making it easier to expel mucus. Warm herbal teas or broths can also provide soothing relief.
2. Steam Inhalation
Inhaling steam can help alleviate congestion and reduce irritation in the airways. Try adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel, and breathe in the steam for 10-15 minutes. This can help clear mucus and ease breathing difficulties.

3. Gargle with Salt Water
A saltwater gargle can help soothe a sore throat and reduce irritation in the throat. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and use it to gargle several times a day.
4. Honey and Lemon
A mixture of honey and lemon can be a natural remedy for relieving cough and soothing a sore throat. Mix a tablespoon of honey with fresh lemon juice and consume this mixture a few times a day.
5. Use Humidifiers
Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which can be beneficial for bronchitis sufferers. Keeping the air in your home humidified can help prevent the airways from drying out and reduce coughing.

6. Rest and Relaxation
Adequate rest is crucial for a speedy recovery from bronchitis. Give your body the time it needs to heal by getting plenty of sleep and avoiding strenuous activities.
7. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping
Elevating your head with an extra pillow while sleeping can help reduce nighttime coughing and improve breathing by preventing mucus from pooling in the airways.
It's important to note that while these home remedies can provide relief, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. If bronchitis symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
