Effective Measures by the Bhagwant Mann Government for Flood Relief in Punjab — Record Compensation for Farmers

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has implemented the largest-ever relief package for farmers and citizens affected by this year’s devastating floods. As part of the “Jis Da Khet, Us Di Rait” (Whose Field, Their Sand) scheme, farmers have been allowed to remove sand from their fields, along with financial assistance of ₹7,200 per acre.

The Chief Minister has also made a historic increase in crop loss compensation. Now, for 26–33% crop loss, farmers will receive ₹10,000 per acre; for 33–75% loss, ₹10,000 per acre; and for 75–100% loss, ₹20,000 per acre. Of this, the state government’s contribution is ₹14,900 per acre — the highest among all Indian states.

In cases of house damage, compensation has also been significantly raised. Fully damaged houses will now receive ₹1.20 lakh, while partially damaged homes will get up to ₹35,100 — a sharp rise from the earlier ₹6,500. Farmers whose land was washed away by the river during the floods will receive ₹47,500 per hectare (₹18,800 per acre) as compensation.

The state government has already released ₹4.5 crore for areas affected by seepage (sem) and has requested the central government to increase flood relief compensation to ₹50,000 per acre. Chief Minister Mann described the ₹1,600 crore assistance announced by the Centre as “a drop in the ocean compared to Punjab’s suffering.”

These initiatives by the Punjab Government stand as a milestone in providing real relief to affected farmers and setting an example of transparent and compassionate disaster management in the state.
