Chocolate and Chicken Broast? Why the Internet Can’t Handle This Food Mashup: Know From A Dietician

Human beings will do almost anything for internet views, particularly food. Unusual and provocative pairings, such as ice cream and Maggi or coffee in watermelon, tend to go viral. But few of these fads are for health or taste. They're merely publicity stunts to drive traffic. The newest one making waves? Chocolate over crispy chicken broast. As the world is abuzz with the internet, health professionals are rubbing their heads in disbelief and rightly so.

"This type of mashup has no connection with health or nutrition," says Dr Shweta Chhabra, Nutritionist, Nourish Me, Raipur. "In fact, this is not any health trend. This is simply that she is making a very foolish effort to become viral and trending. She is not making this for any health's sake," declares Dr. Chhabra.

In her view, pairing two unrelated and calorie-rich foods such as chocolate and fried chicken only confuses the taste buds and strains digestion. It's rich in sugar and fat, not very nutritious, and definitely not a meal that should be had regularly or even a guilty pleasure cheat day meal.

Is Chocolate Good for You?

In the right form and portion, yes, chocolate can have some real benefits. But we’re talking about dark chocolate with 70% cocoa or more, not sugary sauces dumped over fried meat.

Benefits of quality dark chocolate include:

  • Packed with antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation
  • Known to support heart health when eaten in moderation
  • May improve brain function and mood thanks to compounds like flavonoids
  • But with dark chocolate, also in moderation. Consuming it with fatty fried food isn't going to improve either of them, just heavier for your system.

What About Chicken Broast?

Chicken broast is a favourite comfort food, particularly in South Asia. It's crispy, filling, and usually accompanied with spicy sauces and fries.

  • By itself, here's what broast delivers:
  • Good source of protein (from the chicken itself)
  • Has B vitamins and minerals such as selenium and phosphorus

But the drawbacks are:

  • High in unhealthy fats and calories from deep frying
  • Often contains a lot of sodium, which has an impact on heart health
  • Normally served with carb-laden sides such as fries or buns
  • A version made using grilled or baked chicken would provide protein without the extra fats of frying.

So, What's the Verdict?

Combining chocolate with fried chicken not only sounds odd. It's also not doing your health any good. Both of these foods, eaten sensibly and on their own, can be a healthy addition to your diet. But pairing them as a shock tactic disregards taste and nutrition.

Keep your attention on actual food that nourishes your body. Fad "trends" will come and go, but your health remains with you.

Final Thoughts

We all enjoy indulgent food now and then, and there's no harm in enjoying what you eat. But not all hip combinations are worth trying, particularly when they cause more damage than benefit. Before you join the next viral food fad, consider whether it's something your body will appreciate. Not all hype is healthy on or off the internet.
