Deepsikha, who holds an MSc in Global Public Health Nutrition (UK) and is a certified National Diabetes Educator, shares four essential superfoods that she says every mother should include in her daily diet. Her message is heartfelt and simple: “If you really love your mom, make sure she eats these.”

1. Flaxseeds: Nature's Hormone Balancer

Menopause can cause hormone fluctuations that can cause problems for many women. That is where flaxseeds play their role. Jain explained that flaxseeds contain phytoestrogens, or natural compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. They may aid with levelling of hormones and relieving typical menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and irregular periods.

They are also rich in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, which help heart health and digestion.

How to eat: Add 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed to smoothies, yoghurt or sprinkle on top of salads or cereal.

2. Ragi: The Calcium Powerhouse

As women get older, there is a natural decline in the level of their bone density, particularly past the age of 40. Finger millet (ragi) is a great source of calcium: much more than any other grain. As per Jain, it is effective in ensuring better bone health and provides a strong and great supplement to any diet of a mother.

This makes ragi even more attractive because it is gluten-free, as well as it is versatile. It also has iron, amino acids and fibre, which makes it a healthy grain to keep the body in good shape.

3. Dark Chocolate: Happy Hormones and Better Sleep

Good news for chocolate lovers. But Jain advises, it has to be the dark chocolate, and that should be with at least 70% cocoa. Why? These are high in antioxidants; therefore, they help increase levels of happy hormones such as serotonin and endorphins.

Besides, dark chocolate contains magnesium, which is a very useful mineral to use in body relaxation and healthy sleep. Many mothers have trouble getting a restful night’s sleep, and with dark chocolate, this problem can be solved when taken in small quantities every day.

Why it helps: Increases mood, alleviates stress, leads to a good night's sleep.

How to eat: Eat one or two small squares of it two to three times a week after meals.

4. Beetroot and Dates: Iron-Rich Energy Supplements

Jain advises that beetroot or dates should be added to the diet of the mothers as their iron content can increase overall energy.

Dates are not only tasty but are naturally sweet, which again would be a win-win situation in circumstances when moms require some extra nutrition but not at the cost of taste.
