Is Your Child Sweating During Meals? Experts Discuss Causes and Solutions

For many parents, mealtime is a cherished opportunity to bond with their children. But it can be worrying if a child starts sweating while eating even when the temperature isn't high. Understanding the potential causes and solutions for this phenomenon is crucial for ensuring the child’s health and comfort. There is a possibility that there may be an underlying health condition. We spoke to our expert Dr Harish VS, Senior Consultant Paediatrician and Pediatric Pulmonologist, Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Chennai, who shared insights on the same.

Understanding the Causes Of Sweating

Here are some possible causes why your child sweats while eating, as listed by Dr VS:

Sweating Due To Meals

The most frequent and non-pathological causes of sweating during meals may be spicy or hot foods. For instance, chilli peppers used as spices contain capsaicin, which is known to stimulate the sweat glands. “It is possible that some children naturally produce more adrenaline, controlled by the sympathetic nervous system for regulating sweat glands. This may lead to sweating as a normal physiological response to eating, especially if they are excited or anxious about the meal”, added Dr VS.

Sweating Due To Frey's Syndrome

Frey’s syndrome, or gustatory sweating also leads to sweating on the face and neck, particularly when eating certain foods. Although it is a very uncommon condition, it can be detected and treated with the assistance of a doctor. The National Organization for Rare Disorders estimates that 30-50% of individuals who have undergone parotid gland removal develop Frey syndrome.

Sweating Due To Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that is associated with excessive sweating, which may be experienced during eating and other activities. This condition is manageable by proper medical advice and treatment.

Sometimes, sweating during meals may be indicative of certain diseases, such as thyroid disorders, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. It is recommended to consult a doctor if the sweating is coupled with other signs, such as weight loss, tiredness, or abnormal heart rates.

Here are some tips for managing sweating while eating, as listed by Dr VS:

  • Keep track of your child’s diet and determine which food items cause excessive sweating. Avoid foods that are spicy and hot.
  • Make sure the eating environment is cool and comfortable.
  • Ensuring adequate fluid intake to prevent overheating.
  • It is also advisable to dress your child in light clothing, loose and made from material, such as cotton to allow them to breathe well while feeding.
  • If anxiety or excitement about meals is a contributing factor, engaging in calming routines like deep breathing, storytelling, or playing music before meals can be a good option.
  • In case of excessive sweating or if the child has been sweating profusely for a long time, it is advisable to seek the help of a paediatrician. Treatment options may include prescribed medications, changes in diet, or surgery for conditions like hyperhidrosis.

Bottomline

Dr VS concluded, “Though sweating during meals may be concerning for parents, knowing the possible causes and ways to address this issue can be helpful. From changing the child’s diet and surroundings to consulting a doctor for other conditions, one can ensure the child is comfortable and healthy during feeding. It is always important to seek advice from a doctor for personalised treatment options according to needs.”
