Are you frustrated every time you step out in scorching heat as you witness excessive perspiration? It's a common experience! Sweating is a natural bodily function that occurs when your body temperature rises, typically in response to physical exertion, hot weather, or emotional stress. But here's something interesting: did you know that sweating also affects the health of your skin? We spoke to our expert Dr Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, MBBS, MD-Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangaluru, who explained benefits and side effects of sweating on your skin.
Benefits of Sweating for Your Skin
Here are some benefits of sweating for your skin as listed by Dr Chebbi:
Detoxification
Sweating helps to flush out toxins and impurities from your skin through your pores. This is because your body releases substances like urea, salts, and excess water when you sweat., This can help cleanse your skin and prevent the buildup of toxins. According to a review from 2015, it is suggested that the glycoproteins present in sweat attach to bacteria, aiding in their removal from the body.
Skin Hydration
"Sweating can contribute to keeping your skin hydrated by releasing moisture onto the skin's surface. This natural moisturising effect can help maintain skin elasticity and suppleness, reducing the risk of dryness and flakiness," added Dr Chebbi.

Improved Circulation
Another benefit of sweating is that it helps in increasing blood flow to the skin, delivering oxygen and nutrients to skin cells. This enhanced circulation can promote skin cell regeneration, resulting in a healthier and more radiant complexion.
Acne Prevention
Did you know sweating can help in preventing acne? Sweating can help unclog pores by removing dirt, oil, and dead skin cells trapped within them. It may reduce the risk of acne breakouts and other skin blemishes by keeping your pores clear.
Stress Relief
When you work up a sweat during exercise, your body releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones! They're like your body's own little mood boosters. These endorphins can help reduce stress levels and promote relaxation, which can have positive effects on your skin by minimising stress-related skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Side Effects of Sweating on Your Skin
Skin Irritation
Dr Chebbi said, "Excessive sweating can lead to skin irritation and inflammation, particularly in areas where sweat accumulates, such as the armpits, groin, and under the breasts. Friction between sweaty skin folds can cause chafing, redness, and discomfort."
According to a 2019 study, the primary components of sweat include water, urea, lactate, and minerals. For some individuals, the accumulation of these substances on the skin, especially in areas prone to heavy sweating, can act as a trigger for eczema.
Body Odour
You must have noticed the unpleasant smell when you sweat, but did you know sweat itself is odourless? However, when it comes into contact with bacteria on the skin's surface, it can produce an unpleasant odour. Body odour can be exacerbated by factors like poor hygiene, certain foods, and hormonal imbalances.

Dehydration
Excessive sweating, especially in hot and humid environments or during intense physical activity can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause the skin to become dry, dull, and less resilient, increasing the risk of premature ageing and wrinkles.
Skin Infections
Prolonged exposure to sweat can create a favourable environment for the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms on the skin. This can increase the risk of developing skin infections, such as folliculitis, ringworm, and yeast infections. "Infections in the groin area are more prevalent among individuals who experience frequent sweating, such as athletes and those with diabetes," said Dr Chebbi.
Sun Damage
Sweat can act as a magnifying glass, intensifying the effects of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Prolonged sun exposure combined with sweat can increase the risk of sunburn, skin damage, and skin cancer.
Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin While Sweating
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to replace fluids lost through sweating and maintain skin hydration.
- Cleanse Regularly: Shower promptly after sweating to remove sweat, bacteria, and impurities from your skin.
- Use Antiperspirants: Apply antiperspirants or deodorants to reduce sweat production and control body odour.
- Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and moisture-wicking materials to help keep your skin dry and comfortable.
- Protect Your Skin: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sun damage, especially when sweating outdoors.
