Are you a big fan of spicy foods and the spicy food challenges? However, with every bite you take comes the reaction it has on your body. While spicy foods can have both positive and negative effects on your health, however, the impact can vary from person to person. We spoke to our expert Dr Ekta Singhwal, MSc (Dietician), Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who explained the impact of spicy foods on your body, and whether it is good or bad for your health.

Positive Effects Of Spicy Foods

Boost Your Metabolism

Dr Singhwal said, “Spicy foods, particularly those containing capsaicin (found in chilli peppers), can temporarily boost your metabolism. This can help with weight management and may slightly enhance calorie burning.”

Relieves Pain

The capsaicin found in spicy foods has been used in topical creams for pain relief, especially for conditions like arthritis and neuropathic pain. Some people find that consuming spicy foods can also provide temporary pain relief due to the endorphin release triggered by the heat.

Improves Heart Health

According to a study in the European Journal of Nutrition, it was found that women who usually ate spicy food had 26% lower risks of getting hypertension compared to those who did not.  Dr Singhwal added, “Capsaicin may help lower blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, and reduce levels of Low-Density Lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol.”

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Singhwal added that spicy foods have anti-inflammatory properties like turmeric and ginger. This can improve your overall health and may help alleviate conditions with an inflammatory component.

Negative Effects Of Spicy Food

Digestive Issues 

Dr Singhwal informed, “Spicy foods can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion in some individuals. People with conditions like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) may be particularly sensitive to spicy foods.”

Gastrointestinal Issues and Potential for Irritation

Spicy foods can cause diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort in some people, especially if they are not accustomed to eating spicy dishes. This effect is often temporary and can improve as the body becomes more accustomed to spicy foods.

Burning Sensation

Dr Singhwal noted, “Spicy foods can irritate the lining of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract, potentially leading to discomfort and a burning sensation.”

Disrupt Sleep

Dr SInghwal added, “Spicy foods can disrupt sleep in some individuals if consumed close to bedtime. This is due to increased discomfort and a rise in body temperature.”

Individual Sensitivity

Dr Singhwal said, “Some people may have individual sensitivity and it varies in their tolerance to spicy foods. Some may enjoy spicy dishes without any adverse effects, while others may experience discomfort or digestive issues even with moderate spice levels.”

Dr Singhwal concluded, “It's important to note that many of the potential negative effects of spicy foods are dose-dependent. Moderation is key, and if you enjoy spicy foods, it's a good idea to pay attention to your body's response and adjust your intake accordingly. Also, if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian who can provide personalised guidance on your diet, including the consumption of spicy foods.”
