Diarrhoea is a common health condition which is caused due to infection in the gastrointestinal tract. It causes frequent bowel movements, vomiting, nausea, along with watery, loose, or thin stoolsIt can lead to dehydration, cramps, bloating, abdominal pain, weakness, etc. It usually lasts for a few days and therefore, it becomes essential to consult a doctor if it persists for longer. Here are some measures that you can try to treat diarrhoea at home.

Stay Hydrated

It is very important to keep yourself hydrated when you have diarrhoea. Diarrhoea causes loss of fluids from your body and causes dehydration. You can even make an oral rehydration solution (ORS) home by adding salt and sugar to water. Mix six teaspoons of sugar with half a teaspoon of salt in the water to make this drink. It helps to improve the efficiency of fluid absorption in the intestines. Moreover, you should avoid drinking alcohol, carbonated beverages, and caffeine.

Ginger Tea

Drinking ginger tea is a very beneficial remedy to treat diarrhoea due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is good for digestion and can help relieve indigestion and bloating

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that can help relieve irritated intestines. You can add two to three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to water and add some honey to it. Drink this mixture about once or twice a day to improve your condition.

Coconut Water

Coconut water is an effective drink to restore the hydration levels in your body. It provides your body with essential nutrients and can be consumed after your meal. However, ensure not to consume it in excess amounts as it contains potassium, which may lead to diarrhoea. 

Lemon Juice

You can treat loose motions by consuming lemon juice. It is anti-inflammatory and helps restore the pH levels in your body. It contains essential nutrients such as magnesium and potassium that help restore your body’s health. You can add lemon juice to your ORS solution as well.

Banana

You can consume bananas to restore the electrolytes lost from your body due to diarrhoea. Additionally, bananas are high in fibre, which contributes to a more voluminous stool and better bowel movements.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is a probiotic that helps fight the bacteria causing diarrhoea and improves digestion and gut health. You can consume plain yoghurt or add salt or pepper to it for taste.

Turmeric

Turmeric has many health benefits, one of which is treating loose motions. It acts as an antibiotic and is a powerful antioxidant that aids in the digestive process. You can consume turmeric water two to three times a day to ease the symptoms of diarrhoea. 

Fenugreek Seeds

It is an effective remedy that helps fight microbe-causing diarrhoea and improves the digestion process in your body. Soak fenugreek seeds in water for about 15 minutes and grind them to make a paste. Add some water to it and consume this drink.

How To Prevent Diarrhoea

  • You should consume healthy and hygienic food to avoid diarrhoea.
  • You should consume foods like bananas, nuts, beans, etc, that are rich in fibre to prevent diarrhoea.
  • Identify the foods that you are allergic to and refrain from eating them.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and caffeine in excess amounts.
  • When travelling, eat foods that are sealed or fruits that can be peeled.
