Is Makeup Bad For The Eyes? Expert Answers

Eye makeup is a crucial part of our makeup routine. And eye makeup is incomplete without eyeliners and kajals. There are so many other eye products too which are pretty popular. Some of us wear eye makeup daily, be it at work or for other purposes. But have you ever wondered whether eye makeup is safe for our eyes or not? If this question clouds your mind once in a while too, then this article is for you.

In an exclusive conversation with the editorial team of Only My Health, Dr Ashwin Santosh Shetty, Consultant – Ophthalmology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore shares whether eye makeup is safe for our eyes or not. Keep reading.

Is Makeup Bad For Eyes?

Let’s get to the point straight. “Eye makeup is not bad for the eyes, if used carefully and kept clean. Makeup can block oil glands, cause dryness, or lead to infections, if it gets inside the eyes. Using low-quality or waterproof products daily may irritate the eyes. Always wash your hands before applying makeup and remove it before sleeping. Avoid using eyeliner on the inner lash line. Replace mascara every three months to prevent bacteria growth. Choosing good-quality, dermatologist-tested products keeps your eyes healthy and safe,” says Dr Shetty.

On this note, let us take a look at some of the common side effects of using eye makeup:

  • Irritation: Certain Ingredients in makeup products may cause redness, itching, or burning sensations.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some people may be sensitive or allergic to certain components present in the makeup, leading to conjunctivitis or dermatitis.
  • Infections: Expired or contaminated makeup products may contain bacteria or fungi, which can cause infections like conjunctivitis or styes.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: Makeup residue can impact the eyes’ natural lubrication, exacerbating symptoms of dry eye syndrome.
  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: Poor makeup removal practices may lead to meibomian gland dysfunction. This can cause evaporative dry eye and eyelid inflammation.

Wearing Eye Makeup Every Day – Safe or not?

Many of us wear eye makeup daily to work, without giving much thought on how it may be impacting our eyes. “Wearing eye makeup every day is not always bad if done safely and removed properly. Problems occur when makeup is left overnight or used near the inner eye. Daily use can sometimes cause dryness or irritation. To stay safe, choose gentle, hypoallergenic makeup and clean your brushes often. Always remove makeup completely before sleeping and give your eyes makeup-free days to rest. Good hygiene and quality products can help prevent infections and keep your eyes healthy even with daily use,” shares Dr Shetty.

What is the Safest Way to Remove Eye Makeup?

Dr Shetty shares that the safest way to remove eye makeup is to use a gentle, oil-free makeup remover or micellar water. “Soak a soft cotton pad with the remover and press it lightly on your closed eyelid for a few seconds to loosen the makeup. Then wipe gently without rubbing or pulling the skin. Use a separate pad for each eye to avoid spreading germs. Avoid using harsh soaps or alcohol-based products. After removing makeup, rinse your face with lukewarm water and apply a mild moisturizer around the eyes,” says the expert.

Are Eyeliner and Kajal Harmful For Eyes?

Eyeliner and kajal are the most common eye makeup products used by women. Are they safe? Our expert explains that they are safe for the eyes, if used correctly.

“Problems can happen if they are applied too close to the inner lash line, where they can block oil glands or enter the eye. Some kajal brands may contain harmful chemicals or lead. Always wash your hands before applying and remove eye makeup before sleeping. Avoid using eyeliner or kajal inside the waterline daily to keep your eyes healthy and free from infection,” says Dr Shetty.

Tips to Use Eye Makeup Safely

One should follow certain protocols to safely use eye makeup. Dr Shetty shares some habits to help keep your eyes healthy and infection-free:

  • To use eye makeup safely, always start with clean hands and face.
  • Do not apply eyeliner or kajal on the inner lash line.
  • Clean makeup brushes and applicators regularly.
  • Avoid using expired or low-quality products.
  • If you get redness, itching, or irritation, stop using the product immediately.
  • Keep makeup away from direct sunlight and always check ingredients for allergies.
