Delhi Smog Triggers Sharp Rise in Eye Problems, Doctors Warn of 50% Surge in Cases

As Delhi continues to choke under a thick blanket of smog, doctors are warning that the city's worsening air quality is taking a serious toll not just on lungs but also on eye health. Medical experts across the city have reported nearly a 50 per cent rise in eye-related problems over the past few days, linked directly to the toxic pollution levels.

According to Dr Vikram Vora, Medical Director and Chief Health Officer (Indian Subcontinent), International SOS, the fine particulate matter in the air is proving highly injurious to the eyes. “The small particles of dust and chemicals, especially PM2.5 and PM10, can easily settle on the surface of the eyes. They interfere with the tear film, causing dryness, burning sensations, redness, and excessive watering,” he explained.

Doctors are also seeing a sharp rise in cases of pollution-induced eye allergy and inflammation. Many patients complain of eyes that feel gritty, heavy, or sticky, while others report itching and blurred vision. Children and people who spend long hours outdoors are particularly vulnerable.

"The pollutants, like nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon particles, combine with the natural moisture in the eyes to result in mild chemical reactions on the surface, thus leading to irritation and inflammation of that sensitive surface. This is why even healthy people are facing discomfort, and those with pre-existing eye conditions like conjunctivitis or dry eye syndrome are at higher risk," Dr Vora added.

People using contact lenses or eye makeup are very susceptible to these issues. Minute particles of pollution can accumulate between the lens and cornea, increasing the irritation and often resulting in infections. The experts advise for less use of the lenses, especially outdoors, and shifting to protective glasses instead.

How To Protect Eyes From Delhi Smog

To protect eye health amid the continuing smog crisis, Dr Vora recommended the following things:

  • Wash your eyes frequently with cold, clean water to get the pollutants away from your eyes.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes because this may increase inflammation.
  • Use lubricating eye drops to keep the eyes moist and reduce dryness.
  • Wear sunglasses or protective eyewear when stepping out.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible and use air purifiers in living areas.

In case symptoms include redness, pain, or blurred vision, doctors advise immediate consultation to avert complications.

The increasing smog in Delhi is more than a breathing hazard; it is a growing eye health emergency. Taking precautionary care now can save your vision from getting long-term damage.
