Effective Strategies to Combat Dengue at Work and During Travel

Dengue is a mosquito-borne illness that infects thousands of individuals annually. This means that the disease isn't just limited to our home but also our office, vacation spots, and any place at risk for mosquito bites. Offices with stored water, plants, or non-screened windows may unknowingly be breeding grounds, and while travelling, introduce new danger if you go to areas of poor sanitation or high dengue incidence. The important thing is to guard yourself ahead of mosquitoes' attack.

In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, our expert, Dr Vikram Vora, Medical Director and Chief Health Officer (Indian Subcontinent) at International SOS, explained to us that by practising a few easy but consistent habits, one will be able to decrease their risk of dengue at work and while on the move. Read ahead to know what he shared with us.

Effective Strategies to Combat Dengue at Work

Here are the best expert-approved techniques to remain safe from dengue:

1. Ensure your area is clean

Mosquitoes lay eggs in still water. Even small groups, such as water in planters, trays near ACs, or buckets, can become perilous. “Workplaces must ensure regular drainage and cleaning checks to avert concealed breeding grounds,” Dr Varsha shared.

2. Apply mosquito repellents indoors

“Even in air-conditioned offices, mosquitoes creep in,” Dr Varsha warned. Therefore, use repellent creams on exposed body parts or have a personal roll-on with you. Safe vapourisers or sprays can also be used in offices to make common spaces mosquito-free.

3. Dress smartly

Clothing acts as a natural barrier. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants minimises the risk of mosquito bites, especially during off-peak hours of mosquito activity.

Effective Strategies to Combat Dengue During Travel

Here are the best expert-approved techniques to remain safe from dengue:

1. Take personal protection

Always carry repellents, creams, sprays, or patches. Mosquito nets and travel-convenient electronic repellents can prove to be lifesavers in rural or high-risk destinations.

2. Choose safe accommodations

Restaurants with screened windows, mosquito nets, and constant fumigation minimise risks. In case they are not available, use your own mosquito nets or repellents when sleeping.

3. Avoid early morning and late afternoon exposure

The Aedes mosquito that transmits dengue in most cases bites hardest during early mornings and late afternoons. Schedule your sightseeing, outdoor meetings, or walks to avoid these times as much as possible.

4. Don't ignore symptoms

Fever, body aches, and fatigue while travelling do not go unnoticed. Regular check-ups can diagnose dengue at an early stage and avert complications.

Bottomline

Dengue is under control if you remain proactive. Clean environment, protective gear, mosquito repellents, and wise decisions while travelling form a robust defence mechanism against the disease. In othe ffice and on the go, consistency in adhering to these measures is the optimal method of being safe.
