Dengue fever, caused by the Aedes mosquito, can lead to symptoms ranging from high fever and severe headache to joint pain, pain behind the eyes, and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications.

Tips To Stay Protected From Dengue In Delhi

1. Eliminate Standing Water

Standing water is a primary breeding ground for the Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dengue. To minimise mosquito populations, it’s critical to identify and eliminate sources of stagnant water around your home and neighbourhood. Common places where water can accumulate include buckets, flower pot saucers, and air coolers. Be diligent about cleaning these areas and changing the water every two days.

2. Use Mosquito Nets And Screens

Installing screens on your windows and doors is an effective way to keep mosquitoes out of your home. Additionally, using mosquito nets around your bed can provide an extra layer of protection, especially if you sleep with windows open. Since mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and late evening, a net around your bed can help prevent bites during these peak hours.

3. Apply Mosquito Repellents

Mosquito repellents are a crucial defence, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Both natural repellents, like citronella or eucalyptus oil, and DEET-based repellents can be effective. Apply repellent on exposed skin and reapply as directed, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.

4. Wear Protective Clothing

Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks create a physical barrier against mosquitoes. Opt for light-coloured clothing, as dark colours tend to attract mosquitoes. Covering as much skin as possible minimises your chances of being bitten and reduces exposure to the Aedes mosquito.

5. Monitor For Symptoms And Seek Immediate Medical Help

Despite best efforts, dengue transmission can still occur, so be vigilant about monitoring for symptoms. Typical symptoms include a sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, and rash. In more severe cases, symptoms can escalate, potentially leading to dengue haemorrhagic fever, which requires immediate medical intervention.
