Nowadays may people are suffering from this problems called shortness of breath. It is usually a symptom of lung disease but COVID-19 has made it like a synonym of having corona virus infection. However corona virus also affects your lungs and causes infection hence shortness of breath is still linked to lung disorders. Symptoms of chronic lung diseases lead to breathing issues in majority of people which occurs because of inadequate levels of oxygen in the body. Sitting, sleeping or standing in wrong posture can elevate this problem and create more issues. Hence today we will discuss about some positions and postures that can aid in maintaining better oxygen levels in the body. 

What is Shortness of breath?

Shortness of breath or breathlessness refers to a condition where you gasp for oxygen in the body. We spoke to Pulmonologist and Consultant Dr. Rashid Quereshi, Vozart Healthcare, Kochi. He told that breathlessness is more common in people that have lung dysfunctions of have a habit of smoking. Chronic lung diseases are one of the major causes of having breathlessness in people. You may have chest tightness and anxiety when you have this problem and poor position of body can make it worse. Hence you need to use some good postures in order to reduce severity of breathlessness in people.

You need to focus on all types of positions while sitting, sleeping or standing to increase the recovery from shortness of breath. Here are best positions that can help your case-

Sitting Position for Shortness of Breath

Position- A

  • Sit on the chain in relaxed position
  • Keep your feet on the ground very flat
  • Lean a bit forward in order to elevate airflow
  • Rest your elbows on knees
  • Keep your shoulders and neck relaxed 
  • Try to take deep breaths and release slowly

Position- B

  • Place a pillow on the table of average height
  • Sit on the chair beside the table
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor, better without footwear
  • Lean chest forward and place your arms on the pillow
  • Let your forearms relax and take deep slow breaths

Standing Positions to Reduce Shortness of Breath

Generally breathlessness occurs very randomly and suddenly. Hence if you are moving or standing in a place, then you need to be aware of your position in order to reduce breathlessness quickly. Here are some positions for recovery-

Position- A

  • Find a wall or sturdy support near you
  • Stand with your feet wide apart, normally shoulder length
  • Lean your hips on the wall or support
  • Put your hands on the thighs and try to relax your shoulders
  • Bend a little forward 
  • Let your arms dangle in front of you for sometime
  • Practise some breathing exercises

Position- B

  • Find a furniture or surface that is just below your shoulder height
  • Now stand at the furniture
  • Keep your hands and elbows on the furniture
  • Lean a little forward
  • Keep your neck and shoulders relaxed
  • Utilize some breathing technique in order to recover from shortness of breath

Best Sleeping Position to Recover From Breathlessness

If you have an episode of shortness of breath when you are at home or late at night, you need to be careful of what position you are in. Wrong position can make shortness of breath worse, hence here are some positions for recovery you can try-

Position-A

  • Lie of one side of the bed
  • Place your pillow between your knees 
  • Now elevate your head with another pillow so that it is above your body level
  • Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed
  • Now try to take deep breaths and calm down your anxiety

Position- B

  • Lie down on your back straight
  • Keep a pillow under your knees
  • Elevate your head with another couple of pillows
  • Allow yourself to breathe and relax the body
  • Practise some yoga breathing techniques after few minutes
