Vitamin C For Skincare: Experts Explain How It Helps In Reducing Wrinkles And Pigmentation

Do you look in the mirror only to notice wrinkles and pigmentation on your skin? It’s time you stop doing so and start adding vitamin C to your skincare routine. Vitamin C plays a significant role in promoting wrinkles-free skin due to its antioxidant properties. Not only this, it decreases melanin formation and results in reduced pigmentation. We spoke to our experts who explained the role of vitamin C in reducing wrinkles and pigmentation and how you can add it to your skincare routine.

According to a study by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), it was found that consistent daily application of a vitamin C formulation for a minimum of three months enhanced the look of both fine and coarse wrinkles on the face and neck. Moreover, it also helped in refining the overall texture and appearance of the skin.

Antioxidant Properties

“Yes, vitamin C serum can help in reducing wrinkles and pigmentation. As a powerful antioxidant, ascorbic acid (also known as vitamin C) prevents free radical damage to skin cells that accelerates the ageing process”, added Dr Mukesh Batra, Padmashree Recipient, Founder and Chairman, Dr Batra’s Healthcare.

“Vitamin C serum is a game-changer in skincare, thanks to its antioxidant properties that support a radiant, youthful complexion. This powerhouse ingredient shields skin from environmental aggressors like UV rays and pollution, preventing premature ageing”, said Nandita Sharma, Founder and Branding and Marketing Head, Ame Organic

Boosting Collagen Production

Collagen, a protein found naturally in the body, diminishes with age. Reduced collagen levels may result in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. “By boosting collagen production, vitamin C maintains the skin's firmness and elasticity, refining its texture”, added Sharma.

In a limited-scale study by the Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, it was found that the application of a 5% vitamin C solution over six months resulted in augmented skin thickness compared to a placebo solution. Thicker skin, enriched with collagen, tends to exhibit fewer wrinkles than thinner skin.

Reducing Melanin Production

“Additionally, vitamin C helps diminish hyperpigmentation and dark spots, promoting a more even skin tone. When it comes to combating pigmentation issues, Vitamin C stands out as a powerful solution”, said Sharma.

“Vitamin C brightens the complexion by controlling melanin production, reducing existing dark spots and stopping new ones from forming”, added Dr Batra.

According to the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, vitamin C suppresses the production of melanin by decreasing the activity of an enzyme called tyrosinase. It is commonly used in dermatology to reduce pigmentation in hyperpigmented areas of the skin.

How To Include Vitamin C In Your Skincare Routine

Including a vitamin C serum in your skincare routine helps to minimise the symptoms of UV damage, such as wrinkles and pigmentation. Choosing a lightweight, non-sticky, and stable Vitamin C serum can brighten your complexion, fade dark spots, and rejuvenate dull skin, making it a must-have in your skincare routine.

Dr Batra added, “Vitamin C serum can be combined with sunscreen for the best results and increased protection. This preventive measure protects skin health and increases the serum's effectiveness in preventing symptoms of ageing.”

“Vitamin C serums with the extracts of Glutathione and Ginkgo Biloba work as a blessing for the skin. Glutathione promotes skin whitening and eliminates impurities, resulting in a revived and rejuvenated glow. Incorporating Ginkgo Biloba extracts stimulates fibroblasts, offering a youthful, plump, and wrinkle-free appearance”, he added.
