Have you ever wondered if Vitamin C is still the go-to skincare ingredient during the cold winter months? As the weather gets colder and the air drier, our skin can easily lose its natural glow and hydration. Winter can be tough on our skin, leaving it feeling dull and dry. Vitamin C, known for its brightening and anti-ageing powers, is often recommended for year-round skincare, but does it still work its magic in winter? To help answer this question, we reached out to experts Dr Shaurya Thakran, MD Skin Expert and Founder, Rakshaa Aesthetics Clinic, and Dr Vidushi Jain, Dermatologist and Founder, DermaLinks, to see how Vitamin C can help protect and refresh your skin during the colder months.
The Magic of Vitamin C in Skincare
Vitamin C, often referred to as a skincare powerhouse, is renowned for its many benefits. “It's a powerhouse antioxidant,” said Dr Thakran, emphasising how it neutralises free radicals, boosts collagen production, and brightens the skin. These attributes are beneficial all year round, but they become even more pronounced during the winter.
Dr Jain explained, "As winter approaches, the skin’s natural moisture barrier becomes weak, leading to dryness and dullness. Vitamin C strengthens the skin’s barrier function, protecting it from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays, which continue to harm the skin even in the colder months."
Hydration and Vitamin C
A common concern when using Vitamin C in winter is whether it provides adequate hydration. Vitamin C is not a hydrating agent, but it pairs exceptionally well with moisturising ingredients. “These combinations can enhance the skin's hydration and lock in moisture, making Vitamin C serums or creams perfect additions to your winter skincare routine,” added Dr Thakran.
A 2017 research review found that high concentrations of vitamin C are present in healthy skin and organs, indicating that vitamin C is absorbed and stored in the body from the bloodstream.

Selecting the Right Vitamin C Product
Not all Vitamin C products are created equal, and the choice of product can make a big difference in its effectiveness. Dr Jain recommends selecting products with L-ascorbic acid, the most bioavailable and potent form of Vitamin C. “However, for those with sensitive skin, gentler derivatives like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or sodium ascorbyl phosphate may be more suitable,” she advised.
“Proper storage is also crucial to preserving the product's effectiveness. To prevent oxidation, which can render Vitamin C ineffective, it’s crucial to store the product in an airtight, tightly sealed dark container. Freshness and stability are key to ensuring you get the most from your Vitamin C,” added Dr Thakran.
Using Vitamin C in Your Routine
“When incorporating Vitamin C into your routine, it’s important to start slowly and gradually build up. Begin with a 10% concentration and use it every other day. This allows your skin to adjust. Once your skin builds tolerance, you can increase both the frequency and the concentration,” said Dr Thakran.
According to Harvard Health Publishing, consider buying vitamin C products from your dermatologist’s office or a trusted online retailer. Look for a clinical formulation containing an active form of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), with a strength of 10-20% and a pH below 3.5, as this combination has been supported by clinical research.
“For optimal results, apply Vitamin C in the morning, after cleansing and before moisturising. Don’t forget sunscreen, even in winter. UV rays can still damage your skin, and Vitamin C works synergistically with sunscreen to offer double protection,” added Dr Jain.

Warning Signs
“While Vitamin C is widely regarded as an effective skincare ingredient, it may not be suitable for everyone. People with extremely dry or sensitive skin should exercise caution when using Vitamin C," warned Dr Jain. It's always best to perform a patch test first to avoid any irritation. If irritation occurs, it's essential to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best way to incorporate Vitamin C into your skincare routine.
Bottomline
According to both experts, the answer is a resounding yes. “When used correctly as part of a comprehensive skincare regimen, Vitamin C can rejuvenate dull winter skin, providing a radiant, resilient complexion,” said Dr Jain.
“As you bundle up for the colder months, don’t forget to care for your skin. With Vitamin C, you're on your way to glowing, healthy skin all winter long,” added Dr Thakran.
