Harmful Ingredients In Candies
These first few ingredients mentioned on the back of a typical candy pack comprise the maximum quantity of the ingredients. Most of the candies available in the market contain 90% of the bad stuff!
Megha Rawal, Health coach and founder of Mezmo candy has listed down some examples of harmful ingredients that most candies comprise of:
High Fructose Corn Syrup HFCS can make you obese! – It is cheaper and sweeter than other sweeteners and is more quickly absorbed into your body. Eating too much of high fructose corn syrup can lead to insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
White sugar – It is highly addictive because it triggers the release of chemicals – opioids and dopamine. These activate the brain’s pleasure center. A review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has claimed that refined sugar has a similar effect on the brain as illegal drugs. Research has found that sugar is more addictive than opioid drugs. Eating white sugar may cause drug-like effects such as bingeing, craving, tolerance, withdrawal, dependence and reward.
Artificial colours- Electric blue, atomic yellow, fire engine red. The brighter, the better right? That’s what we’ve always expected from candy. They are toxic because they are made from petroleum-based ingredients, which are toxic in nature. They can cause hyperactivity, irritability, allergies and even cancer in the long run.
Are Candies Bad for Children?
Overconsumption of sour candies and harmful ingredients in processed foods has led to obesity, weakened immunity, frequent cold and cough, diabetes, depression, anxiety, ADHD and dental issues.
- These ill effects can be countered if our kids are mobile and active.
- We need to keep a tab on their screen time and encourage them to engage in sports, dancing & household chores.
- Parents need to educate themselves and read the ingredients labels carefully before buying any food item.
