Understanding Slip Disc

As per Dr AK Barnwal, Orthopedic Surgeon, Jamshedpur, a slip disc, also known as a herniated or prolapsed disc, occurs when the inner gel-like material of a spinal disc pushes through the outer ring. This can result in severe pain, numbness, and even mobility issues.

The spinal column consists of a series of bones stacked on top of each other, separated by discs that act as shock absorbers. When a disc is damaged due to injury or weakness, it can protrude and press against nearby nerves, causing discomfort or pain.

Safe Exercises for Slip Disc Recovery

Shreya’s recovery highlights the importance of adopting a fitness routine that prioritizes safety and long-term health. Experts recommend the following gentle exercises to support recovery from a slip disc:

  • Hamstring Stretches: These stretches alleviate tension in the lower back and legs, promoting flexibility.
  • Neck Stretches: Eases pressure on the neck and shoulder muscles caused by nerve compression.
  • Yoga: Improves core strength, flexibility, and posture, aiding in spinal health.
  • Swimming: A low-impact exercise that supports the body while strengthening the muscles.
  • Walking And Cycling: Gentle cardiovascular activities that boost circulation and support the spine.

Incorporating these exercises into a daily routine can help prevent future injuries and improve overall spinal health.
