Cultivating clean eating habits is the first step towards healthy living. We should not eat to fill the stomach but to nourish the body. Ayurveda suggests some dietary principles that, if you follow, can bring great results to your well-being. There are certain practices which we are grown up hearing but have stopped due to modernization. For example, in this era of takeaways, we don’t like to wait for our meals and eat in a hurry, this makes a strong impact on our health. Similarly, there are many more habits that need to be altered if you wish to lead a healthy life.
#1 Never drink water in the standing position
This is one of the first and most important steps suggested by Ayurveda. Standing and drinking is a bad habit that you should stop doing right now! In fact, you must not even eat in the standing position as it bad for your stomach and digestion. As per Dr. Prabhat Ranjan Sinha, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka, Delhi, drinking in incorrect posture directly hampers the internal processes which disturb the fluid balance thereby increasing toxicity levels in the body. This practice may cause Arthritis in the long run.
#2 Have a glass of warm water as you wake up
This is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that is slowly being adopted by Western cultures too. Upon starting the day with warm water, your metabolism gets better and helps indigestion. This habit is particularly good for weight loss.
#3 Always eat in a sitting position
Body posture plays an important role in digesting food. The sitting position is ideal for stomach health and helps in keeping indigestion or gastric problems at bay. Never eat in a sitting position.
#4 Eat according to the season
No matter how much we emphasize eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, it is always less. Foods that have a warm tendency should be eaten in winters and those with cooling properties should be consumed in summers. It is very important to maintain this balance for a healthy mind and an active body.
#5 Prevent overeating
Never have food more than your body needs. Whenever you feel hungry, drink a glass of water as most of the time, we presume thirst to be hunger. Also, you must eat only half of your hunger. It is always better to eat a light meal with lesser spices especially in the night to allow the body to digest.
#6 Say NO to distracted eating
When you are eating, just eat and don’t do anything else. Some people have a habit of watching TV or reading a newspaper or seeing videos on the phone while eating which is extremely bad! Don’t distract yourself.
#7 Eat slowly and chew several times
It is very important to chew your food multiple times. Also, you must eat slowly to allow the food to breakdown properly. When you eat slow, the digestive enzymes get active and helps in the proper digestion of the food. This also prevents getting stomach issues.
