World Cancer Day 2026: 7 Cancer-Fighting Foods Recommended By Experts

World Cancer Day 2026: Your diet plays a major role in how your body fights diseases such as cancer. Our experts share the foods that can help you in this battle

The world unites every year on February 4 to observe World Cancer Day, with the aim of raising awareness and educating the global audience about cancer, one of the most challenging diseases causing public concern worldwide. While medical science has developed several advanced methods to treat this life-threatening disease, what we eat in our daily lives still holds a significant place in the fight against any type of Cancer.

What we eat eventually dictates how our body functions. Our fitness, our immunity, and our ability to lower the risk of severe conditions like cancer are all significantly impacted by our daily lifestyle choices. Experts believe that a diverse diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains acts as a shield against various types of cancer. To gain deeper insights into this, the editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to Ms Veena V, Chief Clinical Dietician & HOD – Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Aster Whitefield Hospital, and Dr Niti Raizada, Principal Director – Medical Oncology & Hemato-Oncology, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru. Continue reading to know what they shared with us.

Can Eating Habits Really Influence the Fight Against Cancer?

While food alone cannot prevent or cure cancer, consistent healthy eating habits can play a supportive role in reducing cancer risk and strengthening the body’s natural defence mechanisms. According to Dr Raizada, diets rich in plant-based, nutrient-dense foods help lower inflammation, improve immunity, and protect cells from oxidative damage, all of which are important in the long-term fight against cancer.

Speaking about the same, Ms Veena V adds that eating habits function as an essential mechanism that supports cancer prevention and improves general health, but they cannot replace medical treatment. "A nutrient-rich anti-inflammatory diet provides multiple health benefits, including immune system protection and chronic inflammation reduction. Conversely, the consumption of processed foods, excessive sugar, and unhealthy fats creates an internal environment that triggers inflammation and metabolic dysfunction," she highlights.

7 Foods That Help Fight Against Cancer

Cancer is essentially a disease where abnormal cells grow out of control and spread to different body parts. According to a Cleveland Clinic report, cancer is the second most common cause of death worldwide, including in the United States. Breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and blood cancer are among the most common and life-threatening types globally.

Reports and experts suggest that certain foods are packed with natural anti-cancer properties that not only contribute to your overall well-being but also significantly help the body encounter the diseases like Cancer. Based on the recommendations of Dr Raizada and Ms Veena V, here are seven functional foods to include in your diet:

2 (92)

1. Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage contain sulforaphane. This compound helps the body detoxify and has shown potential in blocking tumour development.

2. Berries and Colourful Fruits

Berries, citrus fruits, and pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, which protect our cells from free radical damage.

3 (69)

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a prime source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps decrease the likelihood of developing prostate and breast cancers.

4. Turmeric and Other Spices

Turmeric and other common Indian spices contains curcumin, which acts as a highly effective anti-inflammatory substance to keep cellular health in check.

5. Garlic and Onions

Garlic and onions are a staple in most Indian households being used in almost every dish we cook. These pungent bulbs enhance immune function and contain sulphur compounds that are known to fight cancer cells.

6. Green Tea

When many of us choose green tea for its weight loss properties, this popular beverage also provides catechins, which are antioxidants that may prevent cancer cells from growing and dividing.

7. Whole Grains and Legumes

High in fibre, these foods promote intestinal health and maintain hormonal equilibrium, which is vital for lowering cancer risks.

Does the Way We Cook Matter?

It isn't just about what you buy at the supermarket; how you prepare it in the kitchen also matters a great deal. According to Ms Veena V, cooking temperatures above moderate levels, specifically through deep-frying and charring, create dangerous chemicals, such as acrylamides and heterocyclic amines, that increase cancer risks. People who use gentle techniques, such as steaming, light sautéing, or pressure cooking, can better maintain the nutrient and antioxidant content of their food.

Dr Raizada warns, "Overcooking or charring foods can produce harmful compounds. Healthier methods like steaming, boiling, or grilling at lower temperatures help preserve nutrients and minimise toxin formation. Making mindful choices about both what we eat and how we cook can meaningfully support overall health."

Bottomline

As we observe World Cancer Day 2026, it is important to remember that prevention starts in the kitchen. While genetics and environment play their parts, a diet focused on whole, plant-based foods provides the body with the tools it needs to protect and repair itself. As experts suggest, by choosing colourful, antioxidant-rich foods and adopting gentler cooking methods, you are not just eating for today but you are investing in a healthy future.
