Whenever you come across your favourite food, you develop an urge to eat it and consequently end up eating it in large amounts. This is known as overeating. Consuming food in large quantity without having control over your desire can not only lead to obesity but also many other health related problems. Overeating can disturb you mentally and emotionally and harm many vital organs of your body.

Side Effects of Overeating

Weight gain and obesity

The most common of all side effects of overeating is unnecessary weight gain which leads to obesity. When your body has excess fat, it becomes vulnerable to many diseases. It causes fatigue and makes you incapable of performing physical tasks efficiently.

Allergy

Overeating can also be the root cause of many allergies. Consuming food items like egg, milk, fish and sea food in excessive quantity can cause allergies.

Increase in cholesterol level

There are many items which when consumed in huge quantity can increase the cholesterol level in your body. It can also lead to heart attack or stroke.

Acne Troubles

Food items which are rich in fat content can cause acne if consumed beyond measures. You may see some red acne spots on your face if you do not put a control over food items like cow’s milk.

Foul Smell

People who overeat always have a pungent smell originating from their body and mouth. For example, if you eat red meat on a regular basis, avoid eating it in large quantities as it may create a foul smell in your mouth.

Kidney Stone

People who consume more proteins and fewer carbohydrates are always at a risk of developing stone in their kidney. Consume more green vegetables like spinach and drink beverages like tea to fight this.

Memory Loss

Old aged people prefer eating food items which are rich in fat and copper content. Over consumption of these has a straight effect on a person’s brain and causes problems like memory loss.

Swelling

If you over-eat food items which have high sugar or salt level, it may lead to a swollen body.

How to avoid overeating

  • When you have eaten enough to satisfy your tummy, stop eating
  • Don’t eat whatever comes your way. Eat only when you feel hungry
  • Don’t eat just because you think that you are wasting food, keep it in the refrigerator for the time being and eat it later when you are hungry
  • If you have a sweet tooth and can’t do without a sweet dish after food, don’t over-eat the sweet dish. Eat it only for taste
  • Do not consume snacks in large quantity. It kills your appetite for the main course

Eating in right quantity is as important as eating the right quality of food. If you think eating healthy can give you the liberty to eat in as much quantity as you want, you are doing no good to your body. Consider twice if you are really hungry or not before picking up your favorite dish from the plate.
