Quick Bites

  • Western toilets spread infections like UTI
  • Our bodies are designed to squat while pooping
  • Toilet seats are breeders of bacteria, viruses
  • Chemicals in toilet cleaners can even cause colon cancer

Today, the term restroom is blatantly used to refer to toilets. Well, it is not all that blatant considering that we use the term as a part of us by the letter. Flashback to a time when Indian toilets were typical of all households until the ubiquitous ‘cool’ western pots shadowed them. What do you think has changed? A lot, we would say. UTIs and other infections have risen to uncountable numbers. And, there are reasons why.

They are Spreaders of Infections

The western commode has been dubbed as unhygienic by experts, especially when it is looked at in the Indian context and condition. The toilet seat is, for example, a breeding field for bacteria, fungi and viruses that cause urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, diarrhea and a lot more.

They are Made of Crude Chemicals

The material of the seat is an important criterion to look at while buying western commodes for the house. You may also want to look at all the ingredients present in toilet cleaners that you use to clean the toilet seat. A lot of toilet cleaners have ingredients such as alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride that has been bringers of rashes on the skin. These chemicals also cause constipation, which can, in turn, lead to several other health problems such as anal fissures, diverticulitis, piles and even colon cancer.

How to be Safe than Sorry

If you can, try replacing the western pot in your home with an Indian style commode. If you cannot, always pile sheets of toilet paper to cover the layer before you squat. You will also be able to find biodegradable and disposable seat covers in the market today. Also, use an ablution shower or bathroom faucet to “clean up” instead of using tissue papers for wiping.
