Motherhood is a challenging yet rewarding journey that demands a strong support system to navigate its complexities effectively. It is an incredible, magical, and downright exhausting journey. Anyone who is a mom, knows another mom, or has ever thought about what moms go through, will understand the support that mothers require throughout their journey. Let's talk about the challenges faced by the moms and insights of Dr (Prof.) Annamma Thomas, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Sarjapur Road, Bangalore on the pressing need for a strong support system for them.
We all agree that being a mother is difficult and extremely challenging. There is no manual, or one-size-fits-all approach. Every day has a new set of problems, from dealing with toddler tantrums to navigating the complicated teen years. However, one of the most difficult situations is isolation. Despite living in a hyper-connected society, motherhood may sometimes feel like a lonely journey.
It’s crucial to dismantle the myth that moms should “have it all together”
No one has it all together. The image of the supermom who juggles work, kids, and a spotless home while looking flawless is only a mirage. We need to normalise the messiness and the struggle. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to admit that sometimes, it’s overwhelming. The portrayal of the perfect mom creates unrealistic expectations and unnecessary pressure.

A solid support system is essential for mothers
“This includes family, friends, and community resources. Unfortunately, many mothers lack this vital network. It's time to start more mom groups, have more playdates, and establish safe spaces where mothers may discuss their experiences without fear of being judged,” shares Dr Thomas.
Motherhood is supposed to have a strong support-system that lifts themselves up, shares their burdens, and reminds them that they are not alone. It takes a community right? This community can be your partner stepping in for night duties or your best friend who knows your difficulties. It may be an online parent group where you can discuss your successes and struggles while surrounded by women who understand the particular challenges and joys of this journey.
This support system should be free from competition. They must allow moms to know that having the most Pinterest-worthy lunches or the cleanest home is not the expectation they must set themselves up to. It's about sharing the practical and emotional burden, while knowing someone is there to back you, and being reminded that you're indeed a good mother.

Workplaces must also step up
Maternity and paternity leave, as well as flexible working hours, are not luxuries but rather necessities. Moms should not have to choose between their careers and their children. Policies that promote a work-life balance are essential. Imagine a future in which companies truly appreciate the challenges of parenting and provide the flexibility required to properly manage both work and family life.
Dads, your role is important
According to Dr Thomas, “Active fatherhood can significantly decrease stress. Parenting is a partnership, a team effort that should resist the old belief that it is primarily a woman's responsibility. It's 2024, and parenting is a shared responsibility.”

Moms, taking time for yourself is not selfish; it is necessary
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Whether it's a quiet cup of coffee, a long bath, or a night out with friends, taking care of yourself recharges you and makes you a better parent.
To all the mothers out there, you are doing an amazing job. It's okay to ask for help, confess that things are difficult, and take a break. Let us create a world in which women are supported, understood, and celebrated every step of the way. When mothers thrive, families flourish. And when families thrive, society prospers.
So, the next time you see a mother struggling, remember that sometimes the best help is simply letting her know she is not alone. We are in this together.
