Feel Tired All the Time? Fatigue Is The Urban Epidemic No One Is Talking About

Step into any metro in India and you’ll hear the same refrain: “I’m tired, my mind feels heavy, I keep falling sick.” Fatigue, low immunity, and brain fog have quietly become the new epidemics of urban India. But why is this happening, and what can we do about it?

The Urban Energy Crisis

Recent surveys show that nearly 85% of urban youth wake up tired, with over two-thirds struggling to finish their daily activities. Doctors also report a surge in complaints of brain fog, that sluggish, cloudy state of mind where concentration and memory take a hit. Meanwhile, seasonal infections are striking harder and lasting longer, pointing to weakened immunity.
Dr Yogrishi Vishvketu, Global Yoga Educator, Author and Founder of Akhanda Yoga Institute explains, “When the mind and body run on empty, your brain health reduces, immunity weakens, and the whole system begins to age faster, it becomes impossible to be happy or joyful. Yogis say energy is currency, understanding this will help create your own, unique path of success.”

The Science Behind the Slump

Several powerful factors drive this triple burden of fatigue, fog, and low immunity in cities:

  • Nutritional Gaps: Iron deficiency (anemia) is widespread in India, especially among women. With less oxygen carried to the brain, tiredness and poor concentration are unavoidable. Vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies impair nerve function and neurotransmitter balance, showing up as forgetfulness, tingling sensations, or depression. Low vitamin D and magnesium levels weaken immunity and sleep quality. A lack of omega-3 fatty acids, critical for brain membranes, slows cognitive processing and mood stability.
  • Oxygenation Deficit: Anemia, not prioritizing fitness and exercise, shallow breathing patterns, and sedentary lifestyles all reduce oxygen flow to the brain. This not only amplifies sluggish thinking and chronic tiredness but also sets the stage for chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular strain. Reduced oxygenation starves both the body and brain, weakening resilience over time.
  • Lifestyle Stressors: Late-night screen time, irregular meals, overwork, and digital overload keep the brain in ‘survival mode’ elevating stress hormones that erode both clarity and immunity.
  • Immune Burnout: Constant low-grade infections or inflammation drain energy and deplete nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, and protein. Fatigue itself weakens sleep and immunity, creating a vicious cycle.

What the Brain Does While You Sleep

One overlooked factor is sleep. During deep sleep, the brain’s glymphatic system flushes out toxins that build up during the day, including beta-amyloid proteins, which are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep also consolidates memories, processes emotions, and repairs neural connections.

Dr Yogrishi Ji explains, “When sleep and energetic balance are sacrificed, the breath cycle changes which then affects your respiration, circulation, digestion and detoxification. It becomes only a matter of time before the overheated engine causes significant suffering.”

Breaking the Cycle

Fatigue, brain fog, and low immunity don’t just coexist, they feed each other. But science and lifestyle medicine show us a way forward:

  • Nourish with Nutrients: Prioritize iron, B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, protein, and omega-3s. Where diet falls short, supplements can help.
  • Sleep Deep: Commit to 7-9 hours, aligned with the circadian rhythm, to allow the brain’s detox and repair cycle to complete.
  • Move with Intention: Regular fitness, Yoga, and mindful movement do more than burn calories. They increase circulation and oxygenation, support lymphatic drainage (the body’s detox system), and keep blood sugar and blood pressure in balance. Exercise also triggers the release of endorphins and growth factors that protect the brain, improve sleep quality, and slow ageing.
  • Mindfulness & Breath: Practices like meditation, Bhramari Pranayama (the humming bee breath), Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), and Kapalabhati (energizing breath) reduce stress hormones, calm the nervous system, and sharpen clarity. They also support sleep and emotional balance, preventing the mind from tipping into overload.
  • Prioritize Hygiene: Preventing infections conserves both energy and nutrients, giving the immune system space to strengthen instead of constantly firefighting.

The Bigger Picture

Urban India doesn’t need to accept fatigue, brain fog, and low immunity as the new normal. These are signals, not permanent states. By combining better nutrition, rest, mindful breathing, and balanced routines, we can restore vitality.
As Dr Yogrishi Ji reminds us, “Say yes to nourishment, sleep, and balance, and you say yes to a longer, clearer, and healthier life.”
