Why Does Skin Shed After A Kitchen Burn? Expert Answers

Skin peeling after a kitchen burn is a natural healing response where damaged skin sheds to allow healthy new cells to grow. Read ahead to know what the expert recommends.

A small kitchen burn can look harmless at first, but a few days later, you may notice the skin peeling, and shedding like dry paint. Although it is common for most kitchen burns, this situation initially raises two questions, first if it is normal and second if the skin getting worse. According to dermatologists, skin shedding after kitchen burns is a normal body process that shows that the skin is healing.

In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Ruben Bhasin Passi, Consultant Dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explained the reasons behind skin peeling, its impact on recovery, and the ways to maintain proper skin care during this sensitive phase.

What Happens to Skin During a Kitchen Burn?

Dr Passi highlighted that the skin experiences damage when it touches either hot water/milk/oil, steam, flame or heated utensils. In mild to moderate kitchen burns, injuries affect the the outer layer of the skin, also known as the epidermis.  The body immediately activates its repair mechanism after a burn to protect it against infections while it restores the damaged area.

“The body uses this procedure to eliminate both injured and deceased skin cells, which creates space for developing healthy skin cells. This process causes skin peeling which occurs a few days after the burn,” Dr Passi added.

Why Does Skin Peel After Burn?

Dr Passi stated that skin peeling after a kitchen burn is a necessary natural process which supports the healing process. “The body sheds damaged skin so that fresh skin can regenerate in its place. The peeling can occur at a slow pace accompanied by dryness, itching, or tightness,” she highlighted.

Studies show that peeling of skin after a kitchen burn may result from various reasons. The body identifies damaged cells within the skin and it proceeds to eliminate those cells to repair the skin barrier.

Does Skin Peeling Indicate Positive o Negative Effects?

Peeling typically indicates positive skin health progress because it shows that inflammation has decreased and the skin is under its restoration phase. However, excessive redness, pain, pus, or foul-smelling discharge along with peeling may signal infection and should be medically evaluated.

“Peeling often occurs along with other healing changes such as reduced swelling, scab formation, or slight discolouration of new skin,” she noted.

Why You Should Never Peel the Skin Yourself

Dr Passi shared her patients’ experience that people often make the mistake of peeling away their loose skin themselves. However, she strongly warned against it.

“People need to avoid peeling their healing skin because it can disrupt the natural body healing process. Peeling should happen naturally because it allows skin to regenerate through its natural healing course,” Dr Passi emphasised. Forcefully removing peeling skin can:

  • Delay healing
  • Increase the risk of infection
  • Cause scarring or pigmentation
  • Expose sensitivity
