Why Do Eyelashes Fall Out? Rohit Sharma’s Viral ‘Eyelash Wish’ Moment With Rishabh Pant Explained

During the tense second ODI between India and South Africa, a sweet moment stole the show. Rohit Sharma stood near the boundary when Rishabh Pant spotted a loose eyelash on his face. Pant gently picked it up, placed it on Rohit's hand, and nudged him to make a wish. Rohit smiled, closed his eyes briefly, and blew it away, a classic childhood ritual that went viral.

But this also raised a simple question: why do eyelashes fall out so easily? To understand what causes this, we reached out to Dr Neeharika Goyal, Dermatologist, Svastam Wellness Skin Clinic, New Delhi, who explained the science behind eyelash shedding.

What Happened in That Viral Clip

The clip captured everything perfectly. As South Africa prepared to chase, Pant, not playing that match, noticed the eyelash while chatting with Rohit. He carefully removed it from Rohit's eye area and handed it over with a grin.

Rohit played along, making his wish before flicking it away. Social media exploded with nostalgia, calling it a "millennial moment." Some guessed Rohit's wish was for the 2027 World Cup win. The fun exchange showed the team's bond and reminded everyone of simple superstitions.

Why Do Eyelashes Fall Out? Expert Shares the Real Reasons

Dr Neeharika Goyal says that eyelash shedding is usually normal and not something to panic about. “Eyelashes often fall out as part of a normal growth cycle. Each lash grows, rests, and then drops so a new one can replace it,” she explains. Every eyelash has its own cycle, so losing a few from time to time is expected. But sometimes lashes may fall out more than usual.

Common Causes of Eyelash Fall

Dr. Goyal shares the main reasons:

  • Rubbing your eyes: Friction can break or pull out lashes.
  • Harsh or old eye makeup: Mascaras, liners, or removers can irritate the follicles.
  • Rough makeup removal: Tugging or pulling weakens the eyelash roots.
  • Allergies and irritants: These can cause inflammation.
  • Eyelash curlers or extensions: They may strain or damage the lashes.
  • Health issues: Thyroid problems, stress, and infections like blepharitis can trigger extra shedding.
  • Medications: Some medicines may temporarily affect lash growth.

When Should You Worry About Lash Shedding?

According to Dr Goyal, there are certain signs that mean you should not ignore the issue:

  • Many lashes fare falling out at once
  • Redness, pain, or itching on the eyelid
  • Bald patches where lashes are missing

These may indicate an underlying infection, allergy, or hormonal issue that needs medical care.

How to Care for Your Eyelashes

Dr Goyal recommends simple steps that can protect and strengthen your lashes:

  • Be gentle with your eyes, especially while cleansing.
  • Remove makeup softly using mild products.
  • Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyelids.
  • Stop using eye products that irritate your skin.
  • Keep your eyelids clean with warm water and a gentle cleanser.

These steps support healthy lash growth and reduce unnecessary fall.

Conclusion

The viral Rohit-Pant moment gave fans a reason to smile, but it also highlighted something we all experience — losing an eyelash. Most of the time, it’s normal and part of the body’s natural cycle. But if you notice unusual shedding or irritation, it’s worth getting it checked. With a little care and awareness, you can keep your lashes healthy and strong.
