Had too much alcohol? Here's What You Can Do to Deal With A Hangover

Experiencing a hangover after consuming too much alcohol can be uncomfortable, but there are several steps you can take to alleviate symptoms and promote recovery. Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar suggests some tips to help you deal with a hangover:

Hydrate

Alcohol can lead to dehydration, contributing to hangover symptoms. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body. Consider alternating between alcoholic beverages and water during future drinking sessions to help prevent dehydration.

Electrolyte-Replenishing Drinks

Consume electrolyte-rich drinks, such as sports drinks or coconut water, to replenish minerals lost due to alcohol's diuretic effects. These beverages can aid in hydration and restore electrolyte balance.

Eat a Balanced Meal

Eating a nutritious meal can help stabilise blood sugar levels and provide essential nutrients. Opt for foods rich in complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.

Get Some Rest

Allow your body to recover by getting adequate rest. A nap or a good night's sleep can help your body recover from the effects of alcohol.

Pain Relievers (with Caution)

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or aspirin may help alleviate headache and muscle aches, but it's essential to use them cautiously. Avoid acetaminophen (Tylenol) as it can have adverse effects when combined with alcohol.

Ginger or Peppermint Tea

Herbal teas like ginger or peppermint can help soothe an upset stomach. These teas may provide relief from nausea and promote digestion.

Consume Honey or Maple Syrup

Honey or maple syrup may help raise low blood sugar levels and provide a quick energy boost. Adding a small amount to your breakfast or a snack can be beneficial.

Take a Shower

A refreshing shower can help wake you up and invigorate your senses. Alternating between warm and cool water may also improve circulation.

Avoid More Alcohol

While the idea of a "hair of the dog" (having more alcohol to alleviate hangover symptoms) is a common myth, it's not a recommended solution. It may provide temporary relief but can ultimately prolong the recovery process.

Consider Rehydration Solutions

If dehydration is severe, consider rehydration solutions that contain a balanced mix of electrolytes and fluids to help restore hydration levels more effectively.

Limit Caffeine

While caffeine may help alleviate fatigue and improve alertness, it can also contribute to dehydration. If you choose to consume caffeinated beverages, do so in moderation and continue to prioritise water intake.

Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to how your body is feeling and adjust your activities accordingly. Avoid strenuous exercise and give yourself time to recover.

It's important to note that time is the most effective remedy for a hangover. While these tips may help alleviate symptoms, the best way to prevent a hangover is to drink alcohol in moderation and be mindful of your limits. If you consistently experience severe hangovers or have concerns about your alcohol consumption, it's advisable to seek guidance from a healthcare professional.
