LED Light Therapy: Expert Explains Its Benefits On The Skin

Do you know LED light therapy has several rejuvenating benefits for the skin and helps repair and regenerate damaged skin? We spoke to our expert Dr Geeta Grewal, Cosmetologist and Founder, 9 Muses Wellness Clinic, who explained LED light therapy and its importance in rejuvenating the skin.

What Is LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy or low-intensity light therapy was introduced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1990 to heal its astronauts and expedite the healing of skin wounds. These lights are used for various purposes, including non-healing chronic wounds, small basal cell skin cancer, psoriasis, rosacea, and hair loss, etc. It has deeper penetration into the deep dermis, hence it helps to repair ageing skin also.

How Does It Heals Skin

While talking to OnlyMyHealth, Dr Grewal said, "LED light heals skin with photobiomodulation, i.e., the light stimulates skin cells in a way that energises and improves their function and makes them stronger. When cellular function improves, the tissue system also improves, hence improving the quality of the skin."

Red LED Light Therapy

Red LED light is mild-intensity light that helps in the improvement of the skin by increasing collagen and improving fibroblast function. It is effective for all ages between 25-65 years. The therapy involves once-a-week treatment for 20-25 minutes and shows significant improvement when done for three to four months regularly. The energy cells in the skin get stimulated and the water-holding capacity of the skin improves which results in an overall improvement of skin health.

Blue LED Light Therapy

It helps to fight acne, the acne-causing bacteria, and also helps to decrease oil activity in the skin. You can get the desired results with 10 to 15 minutes of treatment once a week, for two to three months. However, remember to use protective eyewear. Post-treatment optimal skin hydration and sun protection are imperative. Another thing to keep in mind is that blue LED light does not penetrate the deeper layers.

Combining Red & Blue LED Light Therapy

Red and blue LED lights can be combined depending on individual skin concerns. Red LED light penetrates deeper into the skin up to the deep dermis and blue LED light reaches up to superficial skin layers. When these therapies are combined, they are non-invasive, pain-free and address multiple skin concerns.

Things To Keep In Mind

These treatments are safe and effective in improving skin function with no damage to the skin, no downtime, and no pain. However, it is recommended to start under expert supervision and not to try it on your own until you understand the benefits and drawbacks. To some people, this may cause sensitivity in skin, pain, swelling, and redness.

Bottomline

Do not expect dramatic improvement in skin quality right away, as these treatments are mild. You will have to be consistent for at least two to three skin cycles to see appreciable improvement in your skin quality. You will observe improvement in skin quality, texture, pigmentation, decreased wrinkles, and the fine line.
