Have you ever felt a bump on the skin like an invisible pimple? It happens with most of us but we choose to ignore it as we cannot see the cause. That is a blind pimple or let’s just say, an invisible pimple underneath the skin. Pimples are generally harmless but only cause pain and discomfort. Blind pimples don’t show up but they are also painful. These are caused due to overproduction of sebum and accumulation of bacteria on the dermal layer. Get more details about blind pimples, their causes and remedial options in this article.
What is a blind pimple?
According to Dr. Nivedita Dadu, Dermatologist, Founder & Chairman at Dr. Nivedita Dadu's Dermatology Clinic, “a blind pimple is the one that is formed under the skin and is not visible on the surface. However, it can be very painful as it is deep inside the skin layers.”
What Causes Blind Pimples?
The surface above the bump is very sensitive and can be very painful while touching. The pain is caused due to the pressure the bump is causing under the skin. Blind pimples generally appear in the areas of the skin with more oil glands. These are caused due to the build-up of bacteria and sebum on the skin layer. So, the main cause of the appearance of blind pimples is improper cleansing of the skin especially when somebody has large pores and oily skin. The bacteria get trapped under these large pores and form acne deep inside the skin. While this is common with people having acne-prone skin, others may also experience blind pimples due to the accumulation of dirt, bacteria and poor skincare.
Dermatologist-Recommended Tips for Blind Pimples
The following are some tips one can follow to avoid getting blind pimples:
- Wash the face twice a day at least with a mild cleanser.
- To treat blind pimples, use cleansers consisting of salicylic acid.
- For sensitive and dry skin, use the salicylic acid-based product only in the concerned area.
- Avoid scrubbing. Sometimes scrubbing can aggravate the skin and worsen acne.
- Use skin care products that do not cause acne. Look for non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, or oil-free labels.
If blind pimples occur frequently or are painful, consult a dermatologist for proper advice.
Home Remedies for Blind Pimple
While the aforesaid recommendations are generic, sometimes these cannot be cured with such tips and you need effective treatment to get rid of blind pimples. Popping a pimple is not recommended in any case. Here are some remedial options.
Use an acne sticker
Products like acne stickers do exist! These are easy and effective to suppress acne or pimple. Get an acne sticker from a drugstore and paste it on the blind pimple spot. You can keep it for a day but change it every 24 hours.
Topical application of Antibiotic and Benzoyl Peroxide mixture
To reduce acne inflammation and get rid of acne-causing bacteria, you can also mix an antibiotic like clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide and apply it to the pimple.
If these don’t work, you must consult a dermatologist for clinical treatment. It is possible that there could be an underlying reason behind it.
