Many men find themselves gaining weight after 30. It has become increasingly common, even when their eating habits have not changed much. Several lifestyle factors can contribute to it, including a slower metabolism, loss of muscle mass, and lifestyle changes, which can collectively make it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.
Why Men Gain Weight After 30
In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, explains that as we get older, our bodies start to change in ways that can affect our weight. “One of the main reasons for this is that our metabolism slows down, which means we don't burn as many calories when we're not active. At the same time, we start to lose muscle mass, and since muscle burns more calories than fat, this can lead to more fat being stored, particularly around the belly area. This can be a gradual process, but it's something to be aware of as we age,” Dr Pillai points out.
Hormonal changes play a big role, too. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), our hormone levels change as we age, which in turn tends to affect our weight. For example, when testosterone levels drop, it can be easier for fat to build up. Dr Pillai explains that this slow decline in testosterone makes it tougher to keep lean muscle and easier for fat to accumulate. This means that even if an individual is eating, exercising, and existing the same, their bodies might start to store more fat, which is mostly around the midsection of their bodies.
