Clean drinking water is the fundamental need of every being for survival. But considering the increasing water pollution, getting clean water has become very difficult. These days we rely on filtration or RO devices to purify water for us but we cannot ignore the fact that their installation is expensive. There are incidences where the so-called purified water by local suppliers was tested contaminated. 70% of the human body is made consists of water where drinking contaminated water can risk your health and life. We all should know how to treat water at home to remove harmful toxins, chemicals, bacteria, etc.

Here are some common ways to purify water at home.


One water purification method that’s prevalent since ancient times is boiling. One of the simplest and effective methods to purify water is by boiling it.

  • Just pour the water in a pan and put it on the stove.
  • As the water gets a boil, sim the gas.
  • Continue boiling for 10-15 more minutes. It is said that the longer water is boiled, the purer it becomes.

The water after boiling may taste flat as oxygen is removed from it, you have to bear with that. You may add a pinch of salt to better the taste of water.

Solar Purification

This is a time-taking method but completely safe, natural and affordable. Sun is the ultimate source of energy and it is also a natural water purifier. It helps expel the dirt, impurities and contaminants from the water giving you clean and purified water.

It so works that the sun conducts evaporation where clean water forms vapors and collected while the impurities are left behind.

How to make your own solar water purifier?

All you need is two bottles and a thin pipe. Fill one bottle with dirty water and evaporate it. Collect the purified clean water in the other bottle.

Not many people know that ceramic is outstanding water purifying material as it allows water to pass through it. This method is widely used in remote countries like Cambodia.

Take a clean ceramic pot or any other ceramic thing and pass impure water through it. The impurities would get collected in the upper surface and you get only clean and pure water on the other side.

However, this method won’t work for organic pollutants and pesticides. If you doubt that water contains these pollutants, consider using a UV filter.

Apart from these organic methods, there are tow more ways for home water purification:

Iodine Purification

Iodine is known to expel toxins from water. A very small amount of iodine (either tablets or liquid) is added to the water that’s to be purified. But since this is a chemical, this method isn’t considered to be done at home. Also, it is meant for short-term use only. 


This is a popular water filtration method that is being used on a wide scale. Most of the big water purification units use this method for water purification. Chlorine effectively filters the water and is quite inexpensive.
