According to the researchers, those who receive daily doses of vitamin-D (needed for the body from other sources, including sunlight), have a 52 per cent lower risk of death from COVID-19. Research by Dr Michael F. Holick
In this study, led by Dr Michael F. Holick, researchers analyzed blood samples of 235 infected people admitted to various hospitals in Tehran. They found that people struggling with vitamin-D deficiency are more at risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 and suffering from sepsis. In both cases, doctors have to work hard to save the lives of the infected. Earlier studies have found that corona is more lethal for white and older adults.
What is the cytokine storm?
- According to Holick, vitamin-D increases the ability of immune cells to bind to the virus and eliminate it. It has been found to play an essential role in transporting T-cells to infected cells and stopping the process of 'cytokine storm'. It is known that cytokine is a resistant protein capable of eradicating harmful viruses.
- However, in the struggle to destroy new types of viruses, the immune system sometimes becomes hyperactive and produces a higher amount of cytokine. In scientific language, this stage is called 'cytokine storm'. This puts the body at risk of causing more harm than the invading virus. Due to organ failure, a patient's life can be lost.
Vitamin-D Sources: The largest natural source of incense, chemically reacting with the cholesterol present under the skin, produces Vitamin D. In addition to salmon, tilapia and trout fish, it is also available in mushrooms, milk, yoghurt, boiled eggs, orange juice and sprouted grains.
