Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins Star, Dislocated His Knee: Can A Dislocated Knee Heal Without Surgery?

Tyreek Hill, one of the NFL’s fastest and most electrifying wide receivers, is facing a serious injury. During a game vs. the New York Jets, Hill caught a pass and went out of bounds when his leg twisted awkwardly. He was immediately carted off the field with a suspected dislocated left knee.

This raises a key question, when a knee dislocates this way, is surgery always required or can it heal more naturally under certain conditions? To get clarity, we reached out to Dr Siddharth Gupta, Consultant Orthopaedics, Metro Hospital and ZenCare Clinic, Faridabad, to explain.

What Happened To Tyreek Hill During the Game?1 - 2025-09-30T215244.783

The injury occurred in a Monday night game against the New York Jets. Hill caught a 10-yard pass and was tackled near the sideline when his left leg twisted awkwardly beneath him. The knee was forced beyond its normal range, visibly bent at an unnatural angle. Immediate medical attention was provided on the field.

Hill was placed in an air cast and carted off, and later taken to a hospital for scans. His coach, Mike McDaniel, confirmed the injury was a knee dislocation and said Hill was hospitalised overnight for further imaging and evaluation.

Can a Dislocated Knee Heal Without Surgery? Doctor Weighs In3 - 2025-09-30T215247.731

To understand the injury better, we spoke to Dr Siddharth Gupta, who explains that healing without surgery depends on the injury’s severity. “Yes, in certain situations, a dislocated knee heals on its own, but it depends heavily on the extent of injury and structures involved,” says Dr Gupta. “A knee dislocation happens when bones like the femur and tibia get displaced from their proper position, usually due to trauma such as falls or sports injuries.”

In cases where ligament, nerve, or blood vessel damage is minimal, doctors may attempt a closed reduction, the manual realignment of the knee bones, followed by immobilisation. “The knee is then braced or splinted to allow soft tissues to heal. Physical therapy is crucial to regain strength, flexibility, and motion,” adds Dr Gupta.

However, many knee dislocations involve torn ligaments, especially the ACL, PCL, and collateral ligaments. “If multiple ligaments are torn, or there is nerve or blood vessel involvement, surgery is necessary to repair or reconstruct damaged tissues and restore joint stability,” Dr Gupta says.

Healing without surgery varies by individual and injury severity. It can take weeks to months, requiring careful medical monitoring with X-rays or MRIs to ensure proper alignment and healing progress.

Recovery and Outlook2 - 2025-09-30T215251.623

Tyreek Hill’s injury, involving multiple ligament tears and dislocation, most likely requires surgery followed by extensive rehabilitation. Recovery from such injuries is lengthy and demanding. Dr Gupta emphasises:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment prevent complications.
  • Surgery aims to restore knee stability.
  • Physical therapy is key to regaining full function.
  • Recovery times often vary from several months to a year or more.

For athletes, this means a challenging road back to peak performance, but advances in surgical techniques and rehab have made successful returns common.

Conclusion

Tyreek Hill’s recent knee injury is a harsh reminder of the risks athletes face. While some knee dislocations may heal without surgery if injuries are minor, the seriousness of Hill’s multiple ligament tears makes surgery and rehab necessary. Expert care ensures the best chance of recovery, focusing on restoring stability, function, and strength. For now, fans can hope for Hill’s successful surgery and long but steady rehabilitation journey ahead.
