Health Conditions That Could Cause Sudden Weight Loss
1. Muscle Loss
One of the problems that usually occur in older adults that causes sudden weight loss is because of muscle loss. Muscle loss is a common problem because muscle mass start declining with age. This could however be possible because of muscle weakness as well. As you lose muscles, you lose weight as well. Muscle loss in younger adults happen to people that have desk job or do not perform any physical activity that could reverse muscle loss. Muscle loss can also occur because of the following reasons-
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Nerve damage
- Multiple sclerosis
- Injuries and bone loss
2. Overactive thyroid
This is a common cause of sudden weight loss for people having thyroid dysfunction. It is also a symptom of having thyroid. Hyperthyroidism develops in the case where the thyroid gland makes too many hormones. These hormones could affect metabolism in the body and thus result to sudden weight loss in some cases. Due to overactive thyroid, it burns significantly higher amount of calories that leads to unintentional weight loss in people.
3. Rheumatoid arthritis
This is an autoimmune disease that could make your immune system attack the lining of joints. Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation in the tissues and thus affects metabolism of the person in such a way that it reduces weight at a significant rate. This condition could also cause swelling and pain in the joints which could later feel stiff if you do not move it for more than an hour.
Here are some reasons that could lead to rheumatoid arthritis-

Another reason for weight loss can be because type-1 diabetes. Your immune system can be attacked dysfunction in pancreas and insulin levels. Without insulin, it is not possible for the body to produce glucose to get energy. This can result to increase in glucose levels and therefore lead to health problems and sudden weight loss. Unexpected weight loss could affect symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. This could also be true for chronic conditions that are caused because of problems in the digestive tract as well. Two most common types of IBD that results to sudden weight loss are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Inflammatory bowel syndrome also disrupts ghrelin, hunger hormones and lepton hormones that reduces appetite and causes sudden weight loss.
7. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
COPD is a progressive lung disorder that could create emphysema and chronic bronchitis. There are many people that have both these conditions. Sudden weight loss can occur due to damage of air sacs in the lungs that make it hard for the person to breathe. Chronic bronchitis causes inflammation in the airways because of which mucus, cough and breathing issues are created. Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases are caused because of the following symptoms-
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Mild coughing that could be with or without mucus
