For new mothers, the postpartum period is a special yet challenging time. After giving birth, it’s essential to focus on their health and well-being alongside caring for the newly born baby. Notably, this period is filled with new experiences, and it can also feel overwhelming as the new mothers will have to balance healing, breastfeeding, and sleepless nights.

According to Dr Amrita Vermani, senior resident, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, Its is very much normal to feel overwhelmed. But feeling of constant sadness and anxiety even after 2 weeks should require professional help.

  • A good rest and adequate sleep whenever possible will help healing of the body.
  • Adequate hydration and having nutrient rich diet is essential for the gut health and happier self
  • Maintaining hygiene, avoid straining, heavy weight lifting, kiegels exercise will gear up recovery
  • Exclusive breastfeeding and ensuring lactation counselling will not only be beneficial for the baby but also promote good bonding with the mother
  • Stay connected and have regular postpartum checkups to monitor and timely manage any unusual symptoms like heavy bleeding, breast engorgement, fever, foul smelling vaginal discharge
  • Prioritising self care will help ease postpartum period

Here are some other key tips to help you navigate this phase smoothly.

Rest and Recovery

The body needs time to heal after giving birth. Irrespective of whether it was a natural delivery or a C-section, the mother should try to rest as much as they can. They must also ask for help with housework or caring for the baby if needed.

Healthy Eating

Right after the delivery, eating a balanced diet is important to help mothers to recover and keep their energy up. They must ensure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, and healthy fats. Keep healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, or yoghurt handy to keep energy up during the hard days.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is very important, especially if the mother is breastfeeding. It helps with milk production and can even help reduce swelling. Try to have a water bottle close by and drink regularly. Herbal teas and water with fruit added can be a nice change to the overall diet.

Take Care of Emotions

For mothers, hormone changes after birth can affect their mood and make them feel emotional or even down. Their partner should support them in these times. Mothers can even talk to their friends, or family if needed to vent out emotional drain. Make time for yourself, even if it’s just a short walk or a few minutes of deep breathing.

How Long Does Postpartum Recovery Take?

The recovery period of postpartum varies from woman to woman. However, in most cases, a new mother takes about 6 to 8 weeks to recover after the birth of the baby. It is often considered the standard timeframe for the mother’s body to heal and for the uterus to retain its normal size.

However, full recovery can take longer, especially if the mother has a complicated delivery or a C-section. In some cases, the mother may feel fully back to normal within 3 to 6 months, while others might need up to a year or more to feel completely recovered.
