Some people eat right before bedtime at night. The moment they finish dinner, they hit the bed. While this may look like a harmless habit, it can be hazardous for health. There should be a gap between dinner and sleep. This is why having an early dinner is said to have a host of benefits, while late dinner is synonymous to bad health. If you want to know more about this, read ahead.
To get an expert view on this,we reached out to Dr Brunda MS, Sr Consultant - Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.
Can A Short Gap Between Dinner and Bedtime Affect Health?
Are you eating dinner right before bedtime? Then you better rethink this habit. Our expert explains why it may be doing more harm than good. “The gap between dinner time and sleep does affect health because the body needs time to digest food properly before lying down. When you eat and sleep immediately, digestion slows down as the body shifts into rest mode,”shares Dr Brunda MS.

The expert continues, “This can lead to problems like acidity, bloating, gas, and acid reflux. Lying down soon after eating allows stomach acid to move back into the food pipe, which may cause heartburn and disturb sleep. Over time, this habit can also increase the risk of weight gain because late-night eating affects metabolism and the way the body burns calories.”

Can Dinner Close To Bedtime Affect Body’s Circadian Rhythm?
You must have heard about circadian rhythms. They play a very important role when it comes to monitoring a person’s sleep cycle. Explaining this, Dr Brunda Ms says, “Circadian rhythms are natural, internal 24-hour cycles that regulate sleep-wake patterns, hormone release, body temperature, and metabolism in response to light and darkness.”
Shedding light on how eating late impacts circadian rhythm, the expert shares, “The body follows a natural sleep–wake cycle known as the circadian rhythm, and digestion also works better during the day when the body is more active. Eating very late at night can disturb blood sugar control and may increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. When dinner is too close to bedtime, the body may store more calories as fat instead of using them for energy. Poor digestion at night can also reduce sleep quality, and disturbed sleep can further affect hormones that control hunger and appetite.”

What Is The Ideal Gap Between Dinner And Sleep?
Now that we know how crucial it is to have dinner much before bedtime, let us understand whether there is any ideal time gap for the same. Our expert explains this. “The ideal time gap between dinner and sleep is about 2 to 3 hours. This gives the stomach enough time to digest most of the food before you lie down. For example, if you plan to sleep at 10:30 pm, it is better to finish dinner by 7:30 or 8:00 pm,” answers Dr Brunda MS.
“Eating a light and balanced dinner with less oil and spice can also help improve digestion and sleep quality. Keeping this healthy gap regularly can support better digestion, better sleep, and overall long-term health,” concludes Dr Brunda MS.
