Skincare After Shaving: Do’s And Don’ts To Keep In Mind For Clear Skin

We've all experienced that post-shave irritation and discomfort. Whether it's razor burn, redness, or ingrown hair, shaving can sometimes leave our skin feeling less than perfect. However, with the right skincare routine, you can minimise these issues and achieve a clear, smooth complexion. Let's delve into the essentials of post-shave skincare and explore the best practices to maintain clear and healthy skin.

Essentials Of Post-Shave Skincare

According to a clinical and aesthetic dermatologist, Dr Swati Mutha, "After shaving, your skin needs some extra attention and care to soothe irritation and prevent potential skin problems." Dr Mutha added that shaving can remove the top layer of skin cells, leaving your skin vulnerable and more prone to dryness, sensitivity, and ingrown hairs. A proper post-shave skincare routine can help restore moisture, reduce inflammation, and promote overall skin health.

What Should Be Included In Your Skincare Routine?

Dr Mutha recommended that your post-shave skincare routine should consist of the following essential steps:

1) Cleansing

Begin by cleaning your skin gently with a non-irritating cleanser. This will remove any remaining shaving cream, dead skin cells, and pollutants from your skin, enabling it to breathe and recover. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, cleansers have progressed dramatically from just serving as cleaning agents for removing sebum, debris, dead cells, and microbes from the skin.

2) Toning

Follow up with a soothing toner to balance the pH levels of your skin and tighten your pores. Dr mutha said that look for toners that are alcohol-free and contain ingredients like chamomile or witch hazel to calm and hydrate the skin.

3) Moisturising

Use a moisturiser specifically designed for post-shave care, as these formulations often contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. Apply the moisturiser generously to replenish moisture and protect your skin's natural barrier.

4) Sun Protection

Never skip sunscreen, even on days when you shave. Shaving can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Don'ts For Clear Skin After Shaving

1)  Avoid Harsh Ingredients

Dr Mutha advised staying away from products that contain alcohol, fragrances, or harsh chemicals, as they can strip your skin of its natural oils and exacerbate irritation.

2) Don't Touch Your Skin

Resist the temptation to touch or pick at any ingrown hairs or razor bumps. This can cause more inflammation, infection, and scarring.

3) Skip Hot Water

While a warm shower or bath before shaving can help soften the hair follicles, avoid using hot water directly on your face immediately after shaving. Dr mutha warned that hot water can dehydrate your skin and increase sensitivity.

4) Don't Rush

Take your time when shaving to ensure a smooth and close shave. Rushing can lead to nicks, cuts, and increased skin irritation.

5) Avoid Over-Shaving

Shave only when necessary and give your skin some time to rest between shaving sessions. Dr Mutha said that over-shaving can lead to excessive irritation and damage to the skin.

Do's For Clear Skin After Shaving

1) Use Clean Razor

Always use a sharp and clean razor blade to prevent unnecessary friction and minimise the risk of skin irritation. Dull blades can cause tugging and scraping, leading to redness and ingrown hairs.

2) Exfoliate Regularly

Dr Mutha recommends including a moderate exfoliation into your skincare routine to help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, hence lowering the likelihood of ingrown hairs. She cautioned against overdoing it, as excessive exfoliating could harm the skin.

3) Apply Aftershave Balm

Aftershave balms can help calm and hydrate your skin post-shave. Look for products that contain ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, or chamomile, which have soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

4) Avoid Rubbing

Use a fresh towel to gently pat your skin dry after washing your face. "Avoid rubbing vigorously, as it can cause further irritation and disrupt the skin's moisture barrier," Dr Mutha concluded.
