#Skincare 101: 6 Things To Do If You Apply Make-Up Everyday

Daily use of make-up can make your features more radiant, boost confidence, and convey your personality. However, regular use of make-up without taking care of your skin can adversely affect the skin's health. In fact, wearing makeup daily can clog pores and lead to breakouts if not removed properly, while prolonged use of certain products might dry or irritate the skin. Therefore, in order to maintain healthy and glowing skin, it is very important to make a skincare routine and swear by it.

In an exclusive interaction, our expert Dr Sanjeev Gulati, Department of Dermatology, Sharda Hospital _ Noida, shared six essential tips for people who wear make-up on an everyday basis. If that struck a chord with you, keep on reading!

1. Double Cleanse at Night

Towards the end of the day, makeup combines with dirt and oil to remain on your skin, clog pores, and cause break-outs. Double-cleanse your face to ensure your make-up comes off completely. “Begin with oil-based cleansers to dissolve makeup and then top it off with a water-based cleanser, which will now clean your face,” Dr Gulati explained. This would also be the cleaning process that is required to achieve a clean palette for your face to breathe into at night.

2. Always Moisturise

Makeup can also make your skin dry if you are in the habit of using long-lasting or matte products. However, hydration helps keep it fresh and firm. Dr Gulati suggested using a moisturiser that perfectly goes with your skin type immediately after washing. Preferably, find products that contain hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin to hydrate and also retain moisture.

3. Never Skip Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have, even if your foundation already contains SPF. “The sun's rays may penetrate makeup and contribute to premature ageing, pigmentation, and other skin problems,” said Dr Gulati. Hence, finish your skincare routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. You may turn to powder or spray sunscreen as a quick touch-up during the day.

4. Exfoliate Frequently

A daily makeup routine will lead to dead skin cells accumulating, which could make your skin look dull and congested. Exfoliating the skin one to two times a week helps remove dead cells and allows the skincare products to penetrate better. Chemical exfoliants with AHAs (such as glycolic acid) or BHAs (such as salicylic acid) are ideal for achieving a smoother and brighter complexion.

5. Buy Quality Products

Not all makeup is created equal. Use products which are labelled non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested, which will help in lessening the risk of triggering irritation and pimple-like pimples. Additionally, sanitise your brushes and sponges regularly so they do not harbour bacteria which lead to acne breakout and infection

6. Take Make-Up-Free Days

Whenever possible, give your skin a break from makeup to rejuvenate and reset. Use these days to indulge in hydrating masks or other treatments that restore and nourish your skin.

Bottomline

Daily makeup application is totally safe for the skin. This is a great way to feel more self-assured and like a better version of yourself. But always keep in mind that maintaining a regular skincare regimen is just as important as applying high-quality skin care products. Use these expert-approved tips to look better and more attractive, whether or not you wear makeup.
