A caesarean or C-section delivery is considered when the safety of the mother and the baby is in question. It is a surgical procedure in which doctors make incisions in the mother's belly and uterus to deliver the baby. As painful as that might sound, the type of delivery is pain-free, as the mother is under anaesthesia and can even witness the childbirth.
The real struggle begins at home, wherein mothers have to cope with pain, ensure limited movement, and fight exhaustion while also caring for their newborns. It is during this time that they require the utmost support and care. In this article, we list some of the most important dos and don'ts for their well-being after a C-section delivery.

What To Expect Post-C-Section?
According to the International Journal of Reproduction, Contraception, Obstetrics and Gynecology, the prevalence of C-section delivery in India has increased from 2.9% during 1992–93 to 10.6% in 2005–06 and to 21.5% during 019–21. The study also noted that women living in urban areas, belonging to rich families, and having higher educational qualifications were more likely to opt for caesarean deliveries.
In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr N Sapna Lulla, Lead Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, says, "Following the procedure, one can expect a hospital stay, experience pain and discomfort, and potentially face mobility issues."
"While most discomfort and pain should significantly decrease within the first few weeks, it's possible to experience some residual discomfort or sensitivity at the operating site for a few months," she adds.
Do’s And Don’ts After A C-Section
After delivering a baby through C-section, there are a few dos and don’ts one must follow, as per Dr Lulla. These include:
Do’s
- Take proper care of the wound to prevent infection, as the site of the incision is close to the suprapubic area, which can get infected with menstrual blood and skin sensitivity to pads and diapers.
- Ensure emotional well-being, as mothers often experience the guilt of not being able to go through a natural delivery.
- Get enough rest and have someone to help with house chores.
- Consult your doctor regarding pain-relieving strategies.
Don’ts
- Do not ignore signs of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or breast abscess.
- Avoid heavy lifting
- Do not indulge in sexual activity for a while
- Avoid driving during the recovery period
- Say no to swimming
A Healthy Diet Is Key
According to Dr. Lulla, maintaining a healthy diet after a C-section is crucial for promoting healing, boosting energy levels, and supporting lactation.
If you’re someone who recently had a caesarean delivery, opt for foods rich in vitamin C and serotonin, which can help in wound healing.
The doctor advises focusing on protein-rich foods, whole grains, fruits, and leafy vegetables in meals and recommends staying hydrated. Moreover, avoid consuming processed and junk foods, caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods during this recovery period, she adds.
