Strep Throat: Signs And Treatment

3rd Edition of HealthCare Heroes Awards 2023

A contagious bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils is commonly called strep throat. It is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria, which is commonly referred to as “strep”.

Symptoms of strep throat include sore throat, swollen tonsils, fever, headache, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. It is imperative to note that sore throat is not always caused by strep, it can also be caused by other illnesses such as the common cold or influenza. Strep throat can cause white patches to form in the throat, which can be a sign of infection. Let’s look at some other signs.

Sore throat

A sore throat is usually one of the first signs of strep throat, and it can be severe. It can be accompanied by a burning sensation and can make it difficult to swallow. Antibiotics, typically of the penicillin class, may reduce the duration of strep infection.

According to the CDC, they may also aid in the prevention of more serious problems such as abscesses, sinus and ear infections, and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (a rare kidney illness).

Fever

A fever is a common symptom of strep throat, especially if it is over 101 degrees Fahrenheit.

The CDC advises persons with strep throat to stay home from work and school until their fever has subsided and they have been on antibiotics for at least 12 hours.

Swelling In Lymph Node

Lymph nodes help to diagnose cancer as well as trap bacteria and viruses. You may be able to feel your enlarged, painful lymph nodes in your neck if you have strep throat by lightly touching the area.

Red And Swollen Tonsils

Red and swollen tonsils are another common sign of strep throat. If a person gets strep regularly, doctors may advise having the tonsils removed.

Headache And Nausea

Another common symptom of strep throat is a headache, which is frequently accompanied by fever.

Everyone's experience with strep throat is unique. The substances your body produces while your immune system prepares to combat infection can cause exhaustion, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

Treatment

Strep throat is typically treated with antibiotics. It is important to complete the entire course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is completely eliminated. Over-the-counter medications can also be used to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with strep throat.

If strep throat is not treated, it can progress to significant problems such as rheumatic fever, heart valve infection, or kidney disease. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if you suspect you or someone else has strep throat.

Strep throat is highly contagious, it spreads through contact with infected saliva and other respiratory secretions. People with strep throat should take steps to prevent spreading the infection to others, such as avoiding close contact, washing their hands frequently, and avoiding sharing eating utensils and drinks.
