Bad taste usually refers to not having ideal taste that should have been present. But in health concerns, bad taste can refer to problems causing unusual taste in mouth. This unusual taste in the mouth can occur because of various health conditions or issues related to oral health. If this abnormal or bitter taste does not go away in a few days, you must get it checked by a doctor. Today we will discuss about some major reasons for developing abnormal or bitter taste in the mouth. It consists of health conditions and problems related to general hygiene. 

7 Reasons For Bitter Taste In Mouth

Bitter taste or metallic taste in mouth can be because of several reasons. However, if the taste continues for long, it is generally due to some underlying health conditions. To prevent yourself and your loved ones from health complications, you must know the causes behind this issue.

1. Inflammation in Gums


One of the reasons for having bitter taste in mouth can be because gum problems and cavities. In case of poor oral hygiene, the dental health is compromised which results in number of oral problems such as gum diseases and infection in gums. This leads to bitter taste in the mouth and foul smell coming out. Most common symptoms of inflammation of gums include-

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swelling in mouth tissues or gums

2. Dryness in Mouth

Another common reason for bitter taste in mouth can be because of dryness in mouth. Many people do not drink sufficient water time to time because of which there is lack of saliva in the mouth. As a result of this condition, you can have bitter or lingering smell in the mouth. It also causes bad breath from the mouth. One of the major reasons for bitterness in mouth could also be because of acid reflux. Acid reflux is the condition in which the juices travel upwards through the oesophagus. Because of this, it results to foul smell from the mouth and bitter taste to sustain in the mouth until the condition is treated. Some common symptoms of acid reflux are-

4. Fungal Growth 

Fungal growth in the stomach or digestive system causes oral thrush. This happens because of taking antibiotics or infection from some bacteria. This is because it infects the liver that produces enzymes and bile juices to over produce in the system and cause bitter taste and bad smell. It is a serious disease that needs to be treated right away to avoid further complications. In case of Hepatitis B, people suffer from symptoms such as-

6. Due to Hormonal Changes 

Hormonal changes play a big role in smell and taste in the mouth. It mostly affects women in the pregnancy, where they have bitter and unusual taste in their mouth most of the times. This happens in the early stage of pregnancy because hormone changes take place and there is a constant metallic taste that remains in the mouth for few months. Foul or bitter taste because of pregnancy does not need any treatment; it usually disappears as the pregnancy progresses.

7. Use of Medications Regularly

As mentioned earlier, use of medication can be a reason for bitter taste in mouth. Firstly medicines do taste bitter and have that after effect in the mouth. Also regular consumption of medicines, especially antibiotics also causes dryness in mouth because of which there is a constant bitter taste in the mouth.
