According to Jayant Jawa,  K11 certified fitness trainer, Oxizone Gym, Karnal, "During exercise, the muscles undergo stress and micro-tears, which need to be repaired and rebuilt." Consuming protein post-workout provides the necessary amino acids to support muscle recovery, repair, and growth. It also helps replenish glycogen stores and aids in overall muscle protein synthesis.

Understanding Pre-Workout Nutrition

Pre-workout nutrition refers to the food and nutrients consumed before a workout. Jawa said that the goal of pre-workout nutrition is to provide the body with enough energy to fuel the exercise session and to optimise performance. While protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, pre-workout nutrition should primarily focus on carbohydrates for immediate energy and glycogen replenishment, he added.

What's The Ideal Time To Have Protein

The ideal timing to consume protein depends on your fitness goals and personal preferences. Here are two scenarios to consider:

Pre-Workout Protein

Jawa said that if your primary goal is to enhance workout performance, consuming a moderate amount of protein before your workout can be beneficial. He suggested consuming protein-rich foods or a protein shake 1-2 hours before your workout. Keeping a two-hour gap allows for digestion and absorption, providing a steady supply of amino acids during exercise.

Post-Workout Protein

Jawa said, "If muscle recovery, repair, and growth are your main objectives, prioritising protein intake after your workout is crucial." The post-workout window, often referred to as the "anabolic window," is typically within 1-2 hours after exercise. During this time, the muscles are more receptive to nutrient absorption, making it an ideal opportunity to consume protein-rich foods or a protein shake to maximise muscle protein synthesis.

What's The Recommended Protein Intake For Muscle Growth?

The recommended protein intake for individuals looking to gain muscle is based on factors such as body weight, activity level, and goals. Here are some general guidelines:

Focus On Post-Workout Protein

Jawa emphasised that for optimal muscle recovery and growth, aim to consume around 20-30 grams of protein within the post-workout window. This can be achieved through sources like lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, or protein supplements. Combining protein with carbohydrates can further enhance glycogen replenishment, he added.

Meet Daily Protein Intake

In addition to post-workout protein, it is important to meet your daily protein requirements. "The recommended daily intake for active individuals ranges from 0.8 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight," said Jawa.  If muscle building is a primary goal, aiming for the higher end of this range may be beneficial.
