The monsoon is often welcomed after the scorching summer heat, bringing much-needed relief. However, along with the rains comes high humidity, which can trigger a range of health concerns. For women, this season can be particularly challenging, as maintaining menstrual health and hygiene becomes more complicated during the damp and humid weather.
In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Kavyashree T S, Consultant – Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, HRBR Layout, Bengaluru, shares three menstrual hygiene tips to make this monsoon safer.
Why Is Menstrual Hygiene Important During The Rainy Season?
Dr Kavyashree explains, "Monsoons as a climate mean a rise in moisture and humidity conducive to the growth of bacteria and fungi. Proper lack of cleanliness, particularly during the menstrual period, during this season enhances the chance of getting rashes, skin irritation, and certain infections."
Poor menstrual hygiene can in turn increase the risk of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). A study published in the Journal of Climate Change and Health found that nearly half of the displaced women in Kerala’s coastal areas, who struggle with menstrual hygiene due to poor facilities and lack of support, reported urinary infections.
This is why the intimate area's hygiene during this time requires particular attention. Listed below are 3 important measures to take:
Change Your Pads And Menstrual Cups More Frequently
“Pads are to be changed and cups to be removed every 4-6 hours and 6-8 hours, respectively, depending on flow,” advises Dr Kavyashree. “Sweaty skin and menstrual cups during hot climates increase the skin’s chances of infections while lending to the smell.”
According to the doctor, ignoring these timelines for cups or pads will lead to infections due to poor hygiene.
Clothing Recommendations
During monsoon, Dr Kavyashree recommends wearing breathable, cotton undergarments and innerwear. She says, “The best breathable undergarments are cotton; these also soak moisture and prevent fungal growth.”
On the contrary, do not wear synthetic and tight clothes which trap sweat and moisture.

Dietary And Hydration Tips For Menstrual Health
It is also crucial to eat healthy and stay hydrated during the monsoons, especially for your menstrual health. “Iron, vitamin C, and green leaves, if consumed in a proper diet, contribute to well-being during menstruation,” says Dr Kavyashree, adding that consuming plenty of water keeps the body toxin-free and does not allow the body to swell.
Additionally, warm foods and herbal teas help in soothing cramps, and reducing the intake of junk food helps in reducing unnecessary discomfort.
A Final Word
Menstrual hygiene is extremely important. It isn’t just about reducing discomfort, but also about preventing infections and long-term reproductive problems.
Therefore, Dr Kavyashree concludes by saying, “Hygiene while menstruating requires one to wear breathable undergarments and replace pads and underwear every few hours, which helps reduce chances of infections. Disposing of old pads while wearing loose cotton clothing also works,” concludes Dr Kavyashree.
